Johnson was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Tenth and to the five succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1807–March 4, 1819).
Johnson was elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John J. Crittenden, and was reelected and served from December 10, 1819 to March 4, 1829.
Johnson is interred in the Frankfort Cemetery, in Frankfort, Kentucky.

Richard Mentor Johnson (October 17, 1780 – November 19, 1850) was a Representative and a Senator from Kentucky and the ninth Vice President of the United States.
Johnson was commissioned a Colonel of Kentucky Volunteers and commanded a regiment in engagements against the British in Lower Canada in 1813.
Johnson was a member of the state House of Representatives in 1850, but he died in Frankfort, Kentucky soon after taking his seat.

Johnson was one of the vociferous young congressmen, led by his fellow Kentuckian House Speaker Henry Clay, known collectively as the "warhawks." During the Twelfth Congress, this group urged military redress for British violations of American frontiers and shipping rights, and in June 1812 they voted to declare war against Great Britain.
Johnson's Kentucky volunteers crossed the Canadian border in pursuit of a combined British and Shawnee force led by General Henry Proctor and overran the enemy position at the Thames River on October 5, 1813.
Johnson's newfound popularity and his characteristic willingness to accede to his constituents' demands ensured his political survival through the furor over the 1816 Compensation Act, which for the first time granted members of Congress an annual salary, rather than paying them only for the days Congress was in session.

Johnson pointed out that it was not uncommon for plantation owners to have relations with their Negro servants, the only difference was that he had chosen to marry his wife in holy matrimony under the eyes of God.

The Johnson bust is unmistakably modeled after the 1843 life portrait by John Neagle, now owned by the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Neagle’s work was exhibited at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, where Voorhees might have seen it.
As a young man, Johnson practiced law, served in the Kentucky state legislature, and was elected in 1806 as a Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives.
Johnson entered the U.S. Senate as a Democrat in 1819, where he advocated abolishing imprisonment for debtors.

Family lore has it that we are descended from Sir William but since Abraham, Isaac and Jacob came to Ontario in 1835 (possibly from Holland Lan Co. lands in N.Y.) we do not know their home location in N.Y. but we do have a powder horn with an attached message stating the information noted above.
In an index to Sir William's papers a Lt. John Johnson was recorded as working as a smith in the Niagara frontier region and reporting to Sir William on Indian attitudes and activity in the area.
