One of Walt Disney's most successful songwriting teams was that of brothers Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman who created the music heard in Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, and many more Oscar-nominated scores for children's films.
After this, the Sherman Brothers began freelancing work on screenplays and scores, including Snoopy, Come Home (1972), Tom Sawyer (Oscar-nominated score), Charlotte's Web (1973), Disney's The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, The Slipper and the Rose: The Story of Cinderella (1977; Oscar-nominated score and song), and The Magic of Lassie (1979; Oscar-nominated song).
Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman also wrote the famous song "It's a Small World." A book about the careers of the Sherman Brothers has been published, entitled Walt's Time: From Before to Beyond.

Sherman began working with his brother and the pair had an early hit with a song written for Kitty Wells.
During the 60s, Sherman and his brother had one non-Disney success with the title song to the uneven "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" (1968), produced by United Artists.
Also in 1974, the Shermans made their Broadway debut with "Over Here!", a WWII-era musical that was helped by the presence of Patty and Maxine Andrews.

Richard Morton Sherman was born in the spring of 1928 in New York City to Rosa and Al Sherman.
At Bard, Richard majored in Music and wrote numerous sonatas and "art songs" during his time there but it was Richard's ambition to write the "Great American Symphony" which eventually led him to write songs.
In 1965, the Sherman Brothers won 2 Academy Awards for Mary Poppins, which includes the songs Feed The Birds, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and the Oscar winner, Chim Chim Cher-Ee.
