 The Life of Richard Neutra
Richard Neutra was born in Vienna in 1892, and emigrated to the US in 1929.
From Neutra's many outstanding residences, two present themselves boldly in his adopted California: the Desert House designed in 1946 for Edgar Kaufmann, set in the hot arid desert surrounding Palm Springs, and two years later, the Tremaine House in the sweeping, tree-shaded, rock-strewn meadowland of Montecito.
Neutra believed that the architect should strive for a response to space and time that may be only fleeting, yet in its intensity becomes truly memorable.

National Building Museum: Windshield: Richard Neutra's House for the John Nicholas Brown Family
Neutra used a detailed questionnaire to learn his clients’ needs and desires for their home, and the Browns offered extensive, thoughtful responses.
One of Neutra’s most significant decisions was his choice of horizontal wooden clapboard, covered in shiny silver-colored paint, for the exterior of the house.
Neutra, with the enthusiastic approval of the Browns, also used many new materials, including aluminum frame windows (one of their first uses in home building), rubber floors, and two of Buckminster Fuller’s prefabricated Dymaxion bathrooms (only nine were ever built).

 Richard Neutra
Richard Neutra (1892-1970) helped to introduce the Internationalist style of architecture to America, which puts him right up there with the chaps who brought over smallpox, fire water, and really tight Italian shoes.
In Neutra's "Rush City Reformed" (1928) we see all the familiar marks of the moderns: straight lines, huge concrete slabs holding thousands of resentful working class tenants, and spaces that were as open as they were pointless.
But Neutra did Le Corbusier one better by ensuring that no one had any view except that of the flat opposite.
