It was won by Virginia Senator Edward L. Schrock (Republican (R)) of Virginia Beach, leaving a vacancy in the Virginia Senate 7th district.
In the November election, there was also a special Senate election to fill the seat of Richard Holland (D) who recently died - Senate district 15.
As a result of the Congressional races in Virginia, one seat moved from Democratic to Republican, that held by Owen Pickett (Democrat(D)) in the 2nd district.
