RICH, RICHARD, IST BARON RICH (14907-1567), lord chancellor, was born of a Hampshire family about 1490, in the parish of St Laurence Jewry, London.
Rich became the first chancellor (April 19, 1536) of the Court of Augmentations established for the disposal of the monastic revenues.
Rich was one of the executors of the will of Henry VIII., on which so much suspicion has been thrown, and on the 26th of February 1548 he became Baron Rich of Leez.

Lady Rich was the mother of six children by her husband when she contracted in 1595 an open liaison with Charles Blount, 8th Lord Mountjoy, a brilliant courtier and favorite of Elizabeth, to whom she had long been attached.
Rich took no steps against his wife during her brother's lifetime, and she nursed him through an illness in 1600, but they obtained a legal separation in 1601, and Mountjoy acknowledged her five children born after 1595.
Richard Barn-field dedicated his Affectionate Shepherd (1594) to her; Bartholomew Yonge his Diana of George of Montemayor (1598); and sonnets are addressed to her by John Davies of Hereford and by Henry Constable.

Rich's fellow-Member at Colchester, John Rainsford, another lawyer, owed his nomination to John De Vere, 15th Earl of Oxford; also Rich owed his return for Colchester to the Earl of Oxford, of whose council he was a member.
Rich was returned to the Parliaments of 1539 and 1545 as senior knight for Essex, with Sir Thomas Darcy as his junior colleague.
In the Parliament of 1559 Rich voted against the Act of Uniformity, and in 1566 he was a member of a delegation from both Houses which addressed the Queen on the subject of her marriage and the succession.

It was founded as a grammar school in 1564 by Richard Rich, 1st Baron Rich, who as lord chancellor and chancellor of the court of augmentations had enriched himself with the spoil of the adjoining abbey and priory of Little Leez at the dissolution of the monasteries.
The school became a notable educational centre for Puritan families in the 17th century, numbering a hundred or more pupils, under Martin Holbeach (1600-1670), headmaster from 1627-1649, and his successors C.
John Wallis and Isaac Barrow were educated here, and also four sons of Oliver Cromwell - Robert, Oliver, Richard (the Protector), and Henry.

After the death of Edward VI, Sir Richard signed the Privy Council's answer to Mary Tudor which pronounced her a bastard and proclaimed Lady Jane Grey as queen.
When Jane was removed and executed, he declared for Queen Mary, entertained her at his manor, and vigorously pursued her policy of reestablishing the Catholic religion, often examining accused heretics himself and committing them to the stake.

Richard, 1st Baron Rich was one of the most unsavoury, and at the same time one of the most successful, characters of Tudor England.
In the church yard is an obelisk in memory of Colonel Jonas Watson 1st who served under the Duke of Marlborough in Flanders and fell in action at the siege of Cartagena in 1741 at the age of 79.
His grandson Jonas Watson 2nd was commissioned at the age of 14, fought at Bunker Hill in 1774 and fell in action near to the house to which he had retired (after selling his commission), while trying to quell a rebellion in Ireland in 1798, at the age of 50.
