Richard Smith is the former editor of the British Medical Journal (BMJ) and chief executive of the BMJ Publishing group.
He worked for the journal for 25 years, from 1979 to 2004, of which the last 13 as editor.
He resigned in 2004 at age 52 to work for the American UnitedHealth Group, the largest healthcare company in the United States, which is expanding its operations in the United Kingdom; Dr Smith is the executive for the company's European operations.

To his surprise he was interviewed for an assistant editorial position which he grudgingly took up after a year in New Zealand (where he also wrote for the journal), thinking he was only going to stay for a few months.
In 1991, he was made the editor after prolifically publishing articles on topics ranging from health care in prisons to an inflammatory piece questioning the future of the General Medical Council.
As we sail on the sea of time, we often feel lost or directionless, and somehow it is reassuring to know that he suffered from the same uncertainty that plagues us all at the birth of our careers.

Tobacco is set to kill one billion people in the 21st century, yet Nottingham University has taken £3.8m from British American Tobacco (BAT) to fund an international centre for the study of corporate social responsibility.
A debate in this week's BMJ discusses whether the university should return the money and whether the editor, Richard Smith, should resign as professor of medical journalism at the university if it doesn't.
He believes that the university has crossed a dangerous line, putting its reputation as a moral institution and highly respected research centre at risk.
