The title Earl of the County of Mayo, usually known simply as Earl of Mayo, was created in the Peerage of Ireland in 1785 for John Bourke, 1st Viscount Mayo.
The subsidiary titles held by Lord Mayo are Viscount Mayo, of Moneycrower in the County of Mayo (created 1781), and Baron Naas, of Naas in the County of Kildare (1776).

MAYO, RICHARD SOUTHWELL BOURKE, 6TH EARL OF (1822-1872), British statesman, son of Robert Bourke, the 5th earl (1797-1867), was born in Dublin on the 21st of February, 1822, and was educated at Trinity College, Dublin.
Visiting the convict settlement at Port Blair in the Andaman Islands, for the purpose of inspection, the viceroy was assassinated by a convict on the 8th of February 1872.

On 8th February 1872, the British Vice-Roy of India, Lord Mayo, was murdered by a convict at Port Blair.

Lord Mayo was a great administrator; among the many reforms that he introduced in India "prison discipline" was one in which he took a deep interest.
In order to make the criminals self-supporting Lord Mayo wanted to introduce agriculture, cattle breeding, growing of cotton and flax for the manufacture of cloth, which industry was to be taught in the jails, and he greatly stressed the idea of using local rather than imported timber.
