Captain Richard Been Stannard (VC, DSO) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
On one occasion during this period Lieutenant Stannard and two of his crew tackled for two hours a fire on the jetty caused by a bomb igniting ammunition.
The KING has been graciously pleased to approve the grant of the Victoria Cross to Lieutenant Richard Been Stannard, R.N.R., H.M.S. Arab, for outstanding valour and signal devotion to duty at Namsos.

Marc Jenkins recorded an impressive victory in Swansea at the weekend, winning the British Triathlon Championship for a second time to confirm his place in the GB team for the European Championships in the Czech Republic later this month.
As predicted, Stannard led out of the opening 1.5km swim phase with Jenkins some way down the field, but the Welshman was quick to seize the initiative on the 40km cycle, establishing an 80 second lead entering transition two.
The world class field fought back during the 10km road stage, at one point closing the gap to under a minute, but Jenkins held on to win the British title again in the final stages by 35 seconds from Don.
