Amazon.com: Casey Stengel: A Splendid Baseball Life: Books: Richard Bak
Charles Dillon Stengel (1890-1975), nicknamed "Casey" because he came from Kansas City (K.C.), was a solid player in the minor as well as the major leagues from 1910 to 1931 and a major-league manager with some bad teams (Brooklyn Dodgers, Boston Braves, New York Mets) and one genuinely great one (New York Yankees).
Appendices include Stengel's major-league playing record and his 1958 testimony before the Senate Subcommittee on Antitrust and Monopoly-"seven thousand words of vintage Stengelese." Photos not seen by PW.
Delightful photographs--including a hilarious one of the legendary Yankees manager gazing into a baseball as though it were a crystal ball--enliven virtually every page of this affectionate portrait of the man who led the Bronx Bombers to ten pennants between 1948 and 1960.

Amazon.com: You're Too Kind : A Brief History of Flattery: Books: Richard Stengel
YOU'RE TOO KIND covers all the bases of flattery, from its early origins in the Egyptian courts, to the modern conceptions we have today.
Without intending to be too kind, the question this book really raises is who should read it.
But this is no more a self-help, climb-the-corporate-ladder book (although if you take his advice you will help your self and, perhaps, reach the top of the ladder) than was Alexander Pope's Essay on Man, which also was a guide through the shoals of life.

 Phantom of the Opera
In the sublimely silly Meyerbeer parody "Hannibal," Webber captures every cliche of 19th century opera: the Carthaginian queen in the antique bustle (Kim Stengel is first-rate as diva queen Carlotta Gludicelli), the fatuous tenor-without-a-clue Ubaldo Piangi (a fine Jimmy Smagula), a ballet of dancing slave girls and even a mechanical elephant.
Within these familiar Gothic romance trappings, Webber and Stilgoe manage to send up operatic conventions of the 18th and 19th centuries.
The battle between the Phantom and Raoul brings the story to its climax, but not before we are treated to Webber's lush music, including the popular songs "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You" and "Think of Me."

As for the effectiveness of Constitution Day, Richard Stengel, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center, cautions that although it's only in its first year, he expects the initiative to grow.
Constitution Day is "a fine idea," says Altoff, "unless it becomes the only education on the Constitution that occurs within a school or a district."
The National Constitution Center in Philadelphia is offering hands-on initiatives, including America Reads the Constitution, where communities are encouraged to have individuals from all walks of life take turns reading portions of the document.
