THOMAS WEST, 3rd or 12th Baron De La Warr (1577-1618), British soldier and colonial governor in America, was born on the 9th of July 1577, probably at Wherwell, Hampshire, where he was baptiied.
His son Charles Richard (18 5 1873), 6th earl, served in the first Sikh war and in the Crimea, and being unmarried was succeeded by his brother Reginald (18,71896) as 7th Earl De La Warr.
Having inherited his mothers barony of Buckhurst on her death in 1870, he retained this title along with the barony and earldom of De La Warr, although the patent had contained a proviso that it should be kept separate from these dignities.

Because De La Warr was created by writ, descent is presumed to be to the heir (or heirs) general, wherefore it fell into abeyance between the daughters of Sir Owen West (and their heirs in turn).

A member of parliament and courtier under Henry VIII., Richard Sackville became chancellor of the court of augmentations in 1548 and was knighted in 1549.
Mortimer Sackville-West was a younger son of George John Sackville-West, 5th Earl, de la Warr (See DE LA WARR): his mother, Elizabeth, Baroness Buckhurst, being a daughter of John Frederick Sackville, 3rd duke of Dorset.
When in 1873 his elder brother, Reginald Windsor, became 7th Earl de la Warr, Mortimer succeeded by arrangement to, the ~extensive estates of the Sackvilles, including Knole Park, their beautiful Kentish residence, which had come to his family through his mother.
