Intellectual garbage, by David Irving - theage.com.au
This Wolstencroft depicts as "a new conception of fascism" that takes into account "the inherent paradoxes of its nature and dialogue" and that has the capacity to "interact with other political philosophies worthy of integration like anarchism, socialism and conceptions of justice, equality, liberty and autonomy".
Richard J. Evans, professor of modern history at Cambridge University, was chief historical adviser to the defence.
But Richard Wolstencroft should spare us the humbug that the MUFF is somehow involved in a search for truth by screening Irving's 10-year-old documentary.

 Bad reputation - Film - www.theage.com.au
Richard Wolstencroft: this year's festival "is strangely quiet".
Wolstencroft, 35, has been infuriating Melburnians for more than a decade, since he founded The Hellfire Club, the fashionable S&M club, back in 1992, under his rather bland pseudonym, Richard Masters.
Wolstencroft started the Underground Film Festival in 2000 as a way of showing films rejected by the Melbourne International Film Festival, including his own privately financed Pearls before Swine, which was about a killer contracted to take down a subversive author.

Film by Holocaust denier pulled from Australian film festival
Richard Wolstencroft, the director of the Melbourne Underground Film Festival, said demonstrators had blocked organisers from entering a venue where the film was to have screened Thursday.
Wolstencroft declined to say whether festival organisers had received threats over its screening of the film or who had locked the cinema.
Wolstencroft said the festival would "happily programme anything by the Jewish community" next year.

In an extraordinarily pompous and confused statement on the MUFF website (www.muff.com.au ), Wolstencroft runs standard leftist lines by referring to the alleged “fascism” of George W. Bush, Tony Blair and Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon and condemning “the application of force and power…in the recent incursion into Iraq and Afghanistan”.
This Wolstencroft depicts as “a new conception of fascism” which takes into account “the inherent paradoxes of its nature and dialogue” and which has the capacity to “interact with other political philosophies worthy of integration like anarchism, socialism and conceptions of justice, equality, liberty and autonomy”.
But Richard Wolstencroft should spare us the humbug that the MUFF is somehow involved in a search for truth by screening David Irving’s ten year old documentary.

PM - Free speech or harmful speech?: David Irving's holocaust denial
RICHARD WOLSTENCROFT: We at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival are very much interested in freedom of speech, and particularly protecting what I would call "unpopular speech".
BEN KNIGHT: Richard Wolstencroft says he didn't expect this reaction from the Jewish community, and while he describes himself as a "transcendental fascist", he says that philosophy does not include racism or nationalism.
RICHARD WOLSTENCROFT: Well, you know, I mean, it's an intellectual debate in my opinion, and I don't think this kind, and even the kind of line of kind of questioning, you're not looking at the central issue that's been based on all democracies: that is the freedom of speech.

 The Review - Scribblings
Well, in the aftermath of that story, Scribblings was contacted by a former co-worker with Wolstencroft, who has a website devoted mainly to expressing his concerns about Wolstencroft’s fascism.
For example, a British filmmaker, Ben Hopkins attests that Wolstencroft told him that "fascism is the only way forward" and then tried to convince him of the misunderstood greatness of Hitler, based on an idiosyncratic interpretation of Nietzsche and Heidegger.
Wolstencroft also describes as his philosophical mentor a man named Boyd Rice who starred in one of Wolstencroft’s films, but was formerly a member of an American neo-Nazi group called the National Front, and has a long history of other links with Holocaust deniers and other fascists.

 The Review - Scribblings
Richard Wolstencroft, the man who directs and founded the Melbourne Underground Film Festival, claims his decision to this year include Holocaust denier David Irving’s racist rant on film, "The Search for Truth in History" in his festival was a statement about free speech, and against censorship.
In his Festival Director’s statement, Wolstencroft talks about his "dream" of what he calls "Transcendental Fascism": "I believe fascism to be about the brute application of power and that all politics is inherently fascist in nature.
Like the Irving film, Wolstencroft’s previous Nazi effort was cancelled by the venue owners in the face of massive community outrage.

 Richard Wolstencroft
Richard Wolstencroft is an independent filmmaker, who has shot three features, two completed, and many shorts, on 16mm, Super 8 and video.
Wolstencroft then made The Intruder as a ‘director for hire’ for Boulevard Films from a script by Frank Howson, which was never completed due to Boulevard’s financial disintegration.
In 2000, the film was rejected by MIFF and in response Wolstencroft founded the Melbourne Underground Film Festival (MUFF), which is now in its sixth consecutive year in 2005.

The informality of the setup really added to opening night's already prevalent air of alternativeness (Lloyd Kaufman was in attendance, screening a couple of scenes from his upcoming Poultrygeist), not to mention the festival's in general, which is one of the best things it has going for it.
Which brings me to Richard Wolstencroft, the festival's director, who I met for the first time at the screening (along with a number of other independent filmmakers).
I've heard a lot of mixed things about Richard over the years, but my first impression was a good one, which is not something I usually say about boisterously outspoken people.

Festival Director, Richard Wolstencroft, says it should have been allowed to go ahead after the Jewish Community Council failed in its court bid to have the film banned last week.
RICHARD WOLSTENCROFT: Threats received by and directed at MUFF and others connected with the running of the festival; controversy and protest, has forced a festival to question its ability to screen this video in a safe environment for its patrons and volunteers and forced the cancellation.
This last minute manoeuvre by the landlord is a shock and disappointment to the festival as are the threats against MUFF and its organisers and their behaviour.

It is an anomaly that a self-proclaimed "underground" film festival needs a handout from the public purse (this time courtesy of the Australian Film Commission).

 the null device
Leftist anti-racist groups are calling for a boycott of the Melbourne Underground Film Festival, citing organiser Richard Wolstencroft's statements professing admiration for various dictators, including Hitler and Mussolini (though also Nu Marxist idols Mao Zedong and Fidel Castro).
Already, anarchist punk band CRASS have withdrawn permission for their films to screen (assuming that they gave it in the first place, which given Wolstencroft's maverick style of doing business, may not necessarily be the case).
Incidentally, it's not just the left who are guilty of this by any stretch; look at all the "patriots" in the USA who dutifully threw their Dixie Chicks CDs on bonfires because the man on Clear Channel told them to.

However, what seems to have really struck a nerve is festival director Richard Wolstencroft’s Director’s Statement.
As its critics note (and whom I’ll get to shortly), it’s kind of a rambling piece that complains that all of Australian cinema is choking on “tokenism,” in that it produces placid bromides that disguise and thus further exacerbate real social problems by skirting around them, e.g.
For all of Wolstencroft’s bluster about building a genuine Australian film “community,” Zoates claims he got what we call in America the “Hollywood blowoff.” Toby also blasts Lloyd Kaufman and Troma Films for screwing him on DVD sales.

On the whole, I find myself agreeing with Wolstencroft's Manifesto, which, while not really adding anything new to the argument (with a few notable exceptions), succinctly sums up the general consensus of an increasingly large number of Australian filmmakers and practitioners.
I also have a problem with a few of the names that appear on Wolstencroft's list of noteworthy contemporary Australian filmmakers, which, given the subjective nature of such a thing, should have probably been left out of the Manifesto altogether.
