Richard de Clare (d.1090), the son of Gilbert, count of Brionne, accompanied William the Conqueror to England in 1066.
Richard descendants acquired the earldom of Gloucester by marriage, and became the leading barons of the south-eastern March by early in the 13th century.
Richard de Clare's heir, Gilbert (1243-95) - Gilbert "the Red" as he was known after the fiery color of his hair - was to become involved in the turbulent English politics of the 1260s.

Gilbert de Clare, 5th Earl of Hertford and 1st Earl of Gloucester) (1180 - October 25, 1230) was an English nobleman of the Norman period.
He was the son of Richard de Clare, 4th Earl of Hertford and Amice Fitzrobert.
He was buried there, before the high altar of Tewkesbury Abbey, on November 10, a monument being erected by his widow, Isabel Marshall, sister of William Marshall, the Surety, and daughter of William Marshall, the Protector.

When Diarmuid MacMorrough, king of Leinster, sought help from Henry II to regain his kingdom, he was pointed in the direction of Richard de Clare and other marcher barons and knights, together with Welsh archers (hence the name "Strongbow").
This army took Wexford, Waterford and Dublin in 1169 and 1170, and Strongbow married MacMorrough's daughter Eve (Aoife).

Richard and Rohais de Clare also set about building a priory at St Neots (now in Cambridgeshire), which was finished around 1100; Richard never saw the dedication service however, as he died around 1090.
However, like so many of the de Clares before him, Gilbert was a brave and fierce fighter; he loyally supported the king, and fought and died for Edward II at Bannockburn against the Scots in 1314.
This was probably due to the fact that the vast fortune acquired by the de Clare family was now divided between the three sisters, to be spent on a first come, first served spending spree by whoever the King granted permission to marry the daughters.
