Topic: Richard of Dover

  Richard of Dover Information
The ten years during which Richard was archbishop were disturbed by disputes with Roger, archbishop of York, over the respective rights of the two sees, and in 1175, at a council held in London, there was a free fight between their partisans.
Richard was more acceptable to Henry II than Becket had been; he attended the royal councils, and more than once he was with the king in Normandy.
Richard died at Rochester on February 16 1184 and was buried in his cathedral.

Intelligent design tied to creationism in Dover trial   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-13)
HARRISBURG -- Board members who succeeded in introducing "intelligent design" to students in Dover Area School District were wary of evolutionary theory and explicit in their desire to balance the teaching of evolution with a more Christian-friendly philosophy, three plaintiffs testified yesterday during the second day of a landmark federal trial.
Bryan Rehm -- a parent, a plaintiff, and a former Dover Area science teacher -- said that the science faculty had been forced to watch a video explaining why Charles Darwin's theories on evolution were being improperly taught to school students.
Before the plaintiffs took the stand, Dover's defense team, a firm that litigates for free on behalf of "Christians and time-honored family values," completed their cross-examination of expert witness Kenneth Miller, a biology professor at Brown University and co-author of a popular biology textbook.

 S Richard of Chichester: Readings
Richard is remembered and revered not as a great scholar or a great political figure, but as a great pastor — a wise, diligent, and saintly bishop who administered his diocese with a perfect mixture of what St Paul calls “goodness and severity”, of discipline and love.
Richard was, therefore, a disciplinarian; but the quality for which he was so greatly loved by his people was his generosity and affection.
Richard’s body was, as he had required in his will, taken back to Chichester Cathedral for burial, while his heart and other organs were interred in the chapel he had just dedicated to St Edmund.

The Stamford campus library of the University of Connecticut was named in 1991 for Jeremy Richard, an esteemed and popular professor of English here from 1980 to 1990, who died at the age of 40.
Richard had a lifelong love of books and libraries and left specific instructions that his personal library of over 2000 books and 350 sound recordings be left to the UCONN Stamford library.
One faculty member said that the saddest thing about the loss of Dr. Richard is that there are generations of students who are not going to have the experience of having him for a teacher.
