The Town of Richford consists of 38.17 square miles and is located at the northeast corner of the County.
Richford is bordered by Broome County to the east, Cortland County to the north, Tompkins County to the west, and the Town of Berkshire to the south.
The old Richford Schoolhouse on Route 38 in the hamlet is being restored thanks to the help of volunteers from Lockheed Martin, a $12,000 grant from the Margaret Truman Faulkner Foundation, and Town residents.

 History of Richford, NY
Dr. Elijah Powell, who came to Richford in 1823 and began the practice of medicine, was one of the foremost men of the village and town for many years, and one who did as much to build up and establish the town as any man ever within its limits.
Previous to the separate organization of Richford, the schools were a part of the system in operation in the mother town of Berkshire, but after the separation the commissioners and inspectors of schools at once set about organizing districts suited to the interests of the inhabitants.
The Richford hill Christian church was organized as a society in 1857, erected an edifice in 1860, and from that time experienced all the' vicissitudes incident to a feeble life until the society was dissolved.

Richford is located in the northeast corner of Tioga County, with an area of 21,835 acres.
Built in 1821 by Ezekiel Rich, it was used as an inn, was used for the first town meeting when the town was duly organized, and was the voting place from the time the town was organized in 1832 until 1891.
The old Richford grade school is still standing, but the students are now bussed to other school districts.

RICHFORD: Kenneth Longey and Brian Broe looked around the newly framed-up apartments and offices in the Richford Main Street Mill and, with the sounds of decades of furniture-making ringing in their memories, were glad to see a piece of local history being saved to benefit the community.
The four-story, 48,000-square-foot Richford Main Street Mill is one of three structures remaining from the former mill complex and is in the midst of a major $7 million rehabilitation in Richford?s downtown.
The new, rehabilitated Richford Main Street Mill is expected to open in May 2007, bringing a full-service grocery store to the first floor, new patient care facilities, health offices and a pharmacy run by NOTCH on the second, and 12 new one- and two-bedroom apartments to the third.

The Village and Town of Richford, VT were chosen as the Council's first visit due to the desire of local leaders to participate in this project.
Richford is a community of about 2,200 people and is located in the north central part of Vermont along its border with Canada.
Richford citizens volunteered to serve on committees to address these issues, and met for a training and kick-off meeting in March of this year.

Richford was one of several towns (others being Berkshire, Enosburgh, Montgomery, Wyllis (now Jay) and Westfield) granted by the fledgling Republic of Vermont as a means of raising money to support her troops (the Continental Congress had refused to help).
It is thus presumed to be a "made" name, probably intended to convey an image of fertile lands which would be attractive to prospective buyers and settlers (early settlers, struggling to survive, often called it "Poorford").
As of the Fall of 2002, the trail is complete for its entire length, with the replacement of the collapsed segment of the former rail bridge at Sheldon Junction.
