Richland Township, like other rural municipalities, maintained a system of public one-room schoolhouses until the early 1950's.
Public schools began in Pennsylvania in 1834, when the Free School Act was passed which provided funding from the Commonwealth, when local municipalities ran schools which were open to all of the children of the municipality at no cost to the families.
The village of Quakertown was a part of Richland Township until it became a borough 150 years ago, in 1855.

A feature of interest in the settlement of Richland, is that is was first peopled by English Friends, who located far away from their kindred in the lower section of the county, and who reached their new homes over the route afterward traversed by the Germans who settled Milford.
The English preceded the Germans into Richland several years, and while the descendants of the former are quite numerous, those of the latter predominate, and Richland is a German township.
RICHLAND CENTER-- By 1860 a town (Quakertown) of considerable size had sprung up around the station (North Pennsylvania Railroad), almost a mile away from the old town, where the post office was still stationed.

He was born on the homestead in Bedminster township, June 11, 1781, and on arriving at manhood married Mary MOYER, and followed farming in Bedminster until 1822, when they removed to Richland township, where he also followed agricultural pursuits until his death on December 27, 1855.
He began the practice of medicine at Salfordville, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, but, owing to ill health, at the end of three years he sold his practice and removed to Quakertown, where he is now successfully engaged in the drug business, combined with a large and lucrative office and consulting practice.
He is also a member of the State Medical Society of Pennsylvania, the Lehigh Valley Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Political and Social Science of Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Forestry Association and the Bucks County School Directors' Association, of which he served as vice president.

Mark Schweiker today stood near where Gen. George Washington made his historic crossing of the Delaware River to present a $1.05 million state grant to protect 22 acres of open space in Bucks County.
Bucks County and Upper Makefield Township each are paying 25 percent of the project's cost funded through the county open space program.
In addition to the Wildlands Conservancy grant, DCNR also awarded 27 other land trust grants statewide this year, including one to the Heritage Conservancy for $65,000 to acquire a conservation easement on about 80 acres in Richland Township, Bucks County, to protect Quakertown Swamp.
