It is not to be confused with the city of Richmond, which is in Henrico County.
Researchers are fortunate to find this very old, eastern Virginia county, unlike many similarly situated counties, has had little in the way of record loss.
Also, Richmond County (Along with Essex) is part of what used to be the extinct (Old) Rappahannock County from the 17th century.

Richmond then became part of the trade and commerce of the Northern Neck with the assistance of the import job of Bridge tender who had the responsibility of keeping commerce flowing smoothly both across and under the bridge spanning the Rappahannock.

John Combs of Richmond was born abt 1662, probably in Old Rappahannock Co VA (parent county of Richmond and Essex); died 1716-1717, Richmond Co, VA; married (1) bef 1694, Ann (-----) and (2) bef 1698, Hannah (MASON?) (Wroe?).
John Combs appeared in Richmond County Court orders several more times over the years, including sitting on the grand jury, and on 6 Jun 1705, yet another servant is mentioned, Michaell OWEN, who was adjudged to be 13 years of age.
That Archdale was John's eldest living son is confirmed by both his stated concern that Archdale might dispossess his mother, Hannah, and by a later record dated 22 Jun 1719 in which Archdale sold his father's residence, apparently inherited under the laws of primogeniture, and possibly signaling the remarriage of Hannah.
