RICHMOND HILL, ON, Feb. 9 /CNW/ - William F. Bell, the Mayor of the Town of Richmond Hill, announced today on behalf of Council and the citizens of Richmond Hill that the Town will withhold its contributions to the financial Pooling arrangement imposed on Greater Toronto Area municipalities.
At a special meeting on Monday, February 7, Richmond Hill Council passed a resolution stating that it will not pay its share of Pooling costs to the Region of York, which for Richmond Hill is estimated to be just over $15.6 million for 2005.
This is what is referred to as "Pooling" and, in Richmond Hill's case, the monies are funded through the Region of York's portion of the property tax bill.

During last week's TTC strike, GO Transit was able to run a special morning train on this line at a lower cost than before, and decided to reinstate this train immediately for a trial period until at least October.
GO will monitor the new train's ridership and on-time performance before deciding whether to add the train to the permanent schedule.
The new train leaves Richmond Hill GO station at 6:30 a.m., stops at Langstaff at 6:34, Old Cummer at 6:40, and Oriole at 6:44, and arrives in Union Station at 7:08.

Jack Maple grew up in Richmond Hill, NY off the corner of Forest Park on 108th Street and Park Lane South and would later become known as a larger-than-life crimebuster for the city of New York.
He worked his way up the ranks from a transit cop to an undercover detective patrolling Times Square and the 42nd Street train station at 8th Avenue, and finally becoming a deputy police commissioner in Mayor Guiliani's administration.

There was a similar organization that was already incorporated in the Town of Markham, and their example was helpful with a track record of raising funds on an annual basis to purchase wheelchair accessible vans for transit in the Town of Markham.
The foundation also wanted to broaden the scope of the mandate of their sister organization in Markham and outside municipalities, by moving beyond just transit services and funding equipment and any services that would help break down barriers for people with disabilities and try to create a barrier free community.
In time, the transit services of York Region were amalgamated under what is now knows as York Region Transit and since that capital funding has provided the purchase of several accessible vans for transit.
