The constituency is dominated by Luton airport and the Vauxhall car plant, and it came as a major blow to the area when Vauxhall announced that they plan to close their plant by mid 2002 with the loss of 2,000 jobs.
Richmond is the wild rambling chunk of North Yorkshire that James Herriot described so lovingly in his world-famous vet stories, and is one of the four largest constituencies in the country.
A very middle class constituency, it has the fifth highest proportion of non manual workers in the country (78.9% of its workforce) and over a third of its adult population possess higher educational qualifications, compared with a national average of 13% (according to the 1991 census).

 Richmond in general - Review - The 'Original' Richmond
Richmond is close to Catterick Garrison which held 5000 German prisoners of war during the first world war and is now one of the army's leading training centres.
Richmond is an excellent base for touring the Dales area which will be of particular interest to those who enjoy rural backdrops and early English history.
I would not suggest Richmond as a base for touring the coastal area of Yorkshire of the Vale of York unless you happy to do plenty of driving though if you are doing a 'Yorkshire multi-centre' tour it is well worth considering putting two or three days aside for this part of North Yorkshire.

The Royal Parks have been in touch with SEKA today (13/04/05) and have stated that they are sorry for the situation but it is a regulation imposed by the Secretary of State based on the report done concerning the decline of various bird species.
Richmond Park has already had success in encouraging Skylarks to other areas of the park through restrictions on public access to nesting areas around the Penn Ponds and will be looking to introduce other similar areas for the Skylark’s in the future, again something that we whole heartedly support.
Richmond is a really good site, and we really want to be able to fly there again, which may mean we will have to fly in a different part of the park.

She is supported by the Lib Dem-run Richmond Council which has, despite the Tory revival at local elections, remained remarkably stable and reasonably popular.
Jenny Tonge has been completely disinterest in the affairs of Richmond Park since she won the seat in 1997.
The public in RIchmond have detected this, and a Conservative Majority of 5000 is the most probable out come.

We are bordered by Richmond park, so I took a keen interest in the Queen's Speech when the Queen noted that there will be legislation to improve and update the management of common land.
As Member of Parliament for Putney, I shall be keen to participate in discussion of the legislation to ensure that it safeguards the open spaces that people in my constituency value so much.

Dr Tonge claimed, at a pro-Palestinian rally in Parliament on Wednesday, that life under Israeli rule could be intolerable and made her understand how people could become suicide bombers.
There was a danger her comments would add to the atmosphere of "incitement and hatred" within Palestinian and Muslim societies, which was the real reason for such terrorist attacks "and which last year encouraged two British suicide bombers to travel to Israel to kill innocent people", the spokesman said.
