For much of this this century, Richmond has been dubbed the "City of Monuments." But it could easily be called the "City of Bridges." And even though the James River continues to be the area's most distinguishing topographical feature, many of the city's major bridges cross dry valleys, a reminder of the city's once-rugged topography.
Richmond's first bridge was made of stone and crossed Shockoe Creek at 17th and Main near the site of today's Farmer's Market (The creek still flows, but underground and channeled through culverts to the river).
Richmond's many bridges are all 20th-century structures in their current form, but both are reminders of the city's earliest traffic patterns and reveal how the city and region have grown.
