East Bay: Migration of monarch butterflies gets naturalists aflutter
Many sites are on private property, but fortunately for butterfly enthusiasts, some colonies decide to roost on public land -- on Albany Hill; at the Richmond Field Station, a UC Berkeley facility; and even in a small grove of eucalyptus trees across the parking lot from Newark's NewPark Mall.
Although the monarch migration near Santa Cruz is well known, Southworth said she soon learned there are also colonies at Point Pinole in Richmond, at a golf course in San Leandro, now named Monarch Bay Golf Club, and at other sites in the Bay Area.
Originally, the butterflies set up camp in California's Monterey pines and Monterey cypresses, but many of those trees have been lost to development, and others are being stricken with disease.
