Staten Island is one of the five boroughs of New York City, located on an island of the same name on the west side of the Narrows at the entrance of New York Harbor.
Staten Island is separated from Long Island by the Narrows and from mainland New Jersey by the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull.
The island was probably abandoned later, possibly because of the extinction of large mammals on the island.

Established in 1958, Historic Richmond Town is a joint project of the Staten Island Historical Society, an independent nonprofit cultural organization, and the City of New York, which owns the land and the buildings and supports part of its operations with public funds from the Department of Cultural Affairs.
The Staten Island Historical Society also receives support from the New York State Department of Education, the New York State Council on the Arts, the Institute of Museum Services, the Office of the Borough President, and private contributions from corporations, foundations and individuals.

Peter was a member of the Committee of Safety of Staten Island, January 19, 1776, which selected two representatives to the Provincial Congress which on July 4th made the Declaration of Independence.
After the war he married Dinah Garrison of Staten Island, and moved with his father's family to the Susquehanna valley, near Unadilla, N.Y. He was engaged in the lumbering business until late in life.

Once considered part of Tottenville, Richmond Valley gained a separate identity when a station on the Staten Island Railway by that name was opened soon after the railroad was extended to Tottenville in 1860.

The 16th century Florentine explorer Giovanni Da Verrazano is commonly considered to be father of Staten Island (Richmond County) because he sailed into New York Harbor in 1524 and landed on the Island.
In 1687 the Duke of York offered the island as a prize in a sailing competition which the team from Manhattan won.
Until 1713, when the first public ferry was started to the island, there was no way to get back and forth unless you had a boat.

(Freight service on the island ended in 1990 when the Port Ivory Proctor and Gamble plant shut down in 1990.) A contract was recently let to rehabilitatate the electrical and control systems of the AK lift bridge across the Arthur Kill, the longest vertical lift-span bridge in the world.
All of these industries intend to ship and recieve by rail, still, the future of rail service on Staten Island is far from certain.
