The Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike Authority was established in 1955 to build the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike.
The Richmond and Petersburg areas became industrial and manufacturing centers in the early years of the United States, and in the antebellum period (pre-Civil War period) this expanded and the two cities became major transportation hubs when major railroads (Chesapeake and Ohio, Norfolk and Western, and Atlantic Coast Line) were built through the area.
Richmond, like many other cities in the 1800s, had built a large canal system for commerce, and much of the system was filled in and redeveloped in the 1900s.

 O.R.-- SERIES I--VOLUME XXXVI/2 [S# 68]
The regiment left camp about 7 o'clock on the morning of the 12th instant and moved with its brigade to the Richmond and Petersburg turnpike, which it crossed and took its position on the west side of the turnpike near Dr. Cheatham's house (Company K, Captain Betton, were deployed as flankers to protect our left).
For some cause a gap had been opened in the line of skirmishers and I found my regiment when we again reached the turnpike unexpectedly under the fire of the enemy's artillery and considerably in advance of the line of skirmishers.
We soon came upon the outer works of the enemy at Drewry's Bluff and took position in connection with the brigade on the left of the turnpike, where we remained until the morning of the 16th.

 Policy Study No
There is also a never-used 1953 Wisconsin Turnpike Corporation Act, which permits the incorporation on nonprofit, nonstock corporations which are empowered to construct, maintain, repair, police, and operate turnpike projects on routes approved by WisDOT, with the written consent of the Governor.
While this law could be used to permit the creation of a turnpike authority, it is not suited to the kind of privatization approach being followed in the dozen states summarized in Section 11, since it does not permit the development or operation of toll roads by for-profit entities.
Statistics compiled by the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association show that the accident rate on toll roads is 0.6 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles, compared with 0.9 on the (nontolled) Interstate system-33 percent better.

 Interstate 95
This situation is scheduled to be fixed sometime in the 2010s when a new interchange is to be built, updated signage posted, and I-95 re-routed north of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike.
Some highway mavens think that this will be an inadequate solution, and want the Somerset Freeway built; others want the entire main trunk of the New Jersey Turnpike designated as I-95, as that is where most of the traffic goes anyway; however, this would bypass Philadelphia.

“South of Richmond U.S. 1 is lined with tourist cabins, garages, and lunchrooms swathed in neon lights that at night convert the road as far as Petersburg into a glittering midway.” So reads a federal Works Projects Administration guide to Virginia published in Depression-era 1940.
Along that “glittering midway” was the Chimney Corner Motel, located halfway between Richmond and Petersburg.
“Before 95 was built, it sometimes took two hours to drive from Richmond to Petersburg.

 596 Signal Company
The Richmond-St Petersburg Turnpike, by contrast, used tollbooths every few miles where it was required to stop and pay a small amount.
The New Jersey Turnpike issued a card when one first drove onto it, and that card was returned at the exit, allowing one to drive the entire turnpike without slowing down.
Once landed on Staten Island it seemed a long drive to reach the New Jersey Turnpike and it was dark by the time I did.
