As you move across Richmondshire District from the lowlands of the Vale of York, in the east, to the high hills of the Pennines, in the west, you pass through an agricultural landscape in which large centralised farmsteads are gradually replaced by scattered field barns as the main building element.
However, there are many east of the National Park boundary, mainly in and around the valleys of Swaledale and Wensleydale, where Richmondshire is taking a different approach.
Whilst an enclosed private area is usually necessary, it has to be provided in a way that preserves something of the barn’s direct relationship to the surrounding landscape.
