Rick Hansen (born August 26, 1957 in Port Alberni, British Columbia) grew up in Williams Lake, BC.
In addition to the efforts on behalf of his association, Rick Hansen has also been a long-time supporter of fishing and environmental causes, and acts as Chair on the boards of the Fraser River Sturgeon Conservation Society and the Pacific Salmon Endowment Fund Society.
Hansen shared the Canadian Athlete of the Year Award with Wayne Gretzky in 1983.

Rick Hansen left Vancouver in a wheelchair on March 21, 1985 to travel the equivalent of the world's circumference.
A decade later, it is still accurate to describe Rick Hansen as a “Man in Motion.” The original Legacy Fund is still intact, and, to date, $20.8 million in interest has been awarded in the form of grants to support the areas of spinal cord research, rehabilitation, and wheelchair sports.

Hansen plans to use the 10th anniversary of his trek to introduce a series of new initiatives and programs that will reinforce the goals of the original tour and help establish new goals.
For example, Hansen is currently working with premiers across the country to establish a provincially based fund that would see a portion of relevant traffic offence fines allocated to support spinal cord and head injury research, and rehabilitation and accident prevention programs.
Hansen, a UBC alumnus and a paraplegic since the age of 15, was appointed as a special consultant on disabilities to UBC President David Strangway in 1989 and helped establish the Disability Resource Centre on campus which promotes the full participation of people with disabilities in post-secondary education.
