Hillier was speaking one day after a House of Commons debate over the role of 2,300 personnel in Afghanistan, which came amid opinion polls that suggest Canadians are divided about the country’s role in the war-torn region.
Hillier, who plans to return to Afghanistan in two weeks, said Canada has been a target on terrorist hit lists since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, and that hasn’t changed.

They repeat the latest popular theory that the prime motivating influence behind suicide bombers is the desire to rid their "homeland" of foreign armies and that perverse religious interpretations and the clash of civilizations have nothing to do with their cause.
Hillier's deductions are as valid as those who write books on the subject.

OTTAWA General Rick Hillier is officially the new Chief of the Defence Staff for the Canadian Forces.
General Hillier has served throughout Canada, twice in both Europe and the United States, and with the United Nations and NATO forces in the former Yugoslavia and in Afghanistan.
General Hillier takes over as Chief of the Defence Staff from General Ray Henault who was elected Chairman of the NATO Military Committee and will assume that position this spring.

Major General Rick Hillier completed his studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and, after basic armour training in 1976, was posted to the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's) in Petawawa, Ontario, followed in 1979 by a posting to the Royal Canadian Dragoons in Lahr, Germany.
On completion of his command tour, Major General Hillier was posted to National Defence Headquarters (NDHQ), Ottawa, and employed first as the Executive Assistant to the Associate Assistant Deputy Minister (Personnel), then Executive Assistant to the Vice Chief of Defence Staff and, following promotion to Colonel in 1994, as the Director NDHQ Secretariat.

But that's what bothers me most, Peter: General Hillier is not supposed to be a politician; in his job he is surely supposed to be smart enough to grasp the dangers of politicizing the military, and yet he did it.
Hillier did not say that the, "number one job is killing people." He said that the, "number one job is to be able to kill people." That's a distinction I often see ignored.
I imagine (hope) Hillier is talking about attacks on Afghani civilians and police, and the stated mission of the UN force to thwart them from taking the country back.
