These faceless, nameless characters aren’t fated for revival, and the sheer enormity of their numbers dulls the readers beyond the ability to comprehend the disaster.
When applied to major comic characters, a death or a resurrection is generally done for publicity -- that is, to revive the interest of the readers who have fallen away and thus resuscitate sales.

SHAKSPER 1993: Re: Nubility and Juliet's Age
I've argued elsewhere that it was a subliminal way to evoke sympathy for the plight of the Earl of Southampton, who about the time of the play was being pressured to enter into an unwanted marriage with Elizabeth Vere by his guardian Lord Burghley.
To a modern audience, it is true, that insistence upon Juliet's age has little meaning, except, perhaps, to misunderstand her plight because we no longer consider 13 as an age of legal consent.

Supporting characters, like sidekicks and any other role in fiction, bring new depth and dimensions to the overall story.
Whether that’s in a sense of protecting their supporting characters, or proving them wrong, or looking to them for inspiration, or one of several other factors that make supporting characters so crucial to the story.
Supporting characters are often overlooked because they don’t take the center stage and outshine all others, at least not most of the time.

I'm working on a comic, and in one of the characters monologues, she uses the word "spaz".

An Objectivist Critique Of The Incredible Hulk - Objectivism Online Forum
In the first 3 issues alone, while the character was still being developed, the Hulk was a malevolent character that sometimes wanted to conquer the world.
Had Rick Jones, the teenager, not managed to sneak onto the military base during the bomb's test, Bruce Banner would never have rushed out to save him.
This ultimately reveals an interesting dichotomy in the Hulk's character: He represents both the individual, struggling against the collectivists to pursue his own rational self interests as well as being a creature whose very nature prevents him from using reason in the pursuit of happiness.

So, rather than retire those characters, as some people have suggested, I think their spotty publishing history since they were created just makes them more attractive because there's so much material to start with, and there's so much room to fool around.
