Laird began his musical career as a teen in New Zealand, where his family had moved from his native Dublin, Ireland.

Pages of Fire: Articles: Rick Laird
Laird is best known for his role as the bass player of the premier fusion band of the early Seventies, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, from its inception in June 1971 until late December 1973.
Rick's father had a ukulele, and the young boy began fiddling around on that and the piano when he was only three years old.
Rick feels that it's important that the bass player be concerned with making his or her instrument the foundation of the group, even though it may mean sacrificing a bit of flash.

New York titled WHY MAHAVISHNU IS BREAKING UP Rick Laird, former bassist with the now-scattered Mahavishnu Orchestra said it was a case of too much ego and pride that finally doomed the band.
Laird, the second member of the Orchestra to state his views on the group’s breakup, directed most of his remarks to the subject of John McLaughlin and his leadership.
The first year and a half, said Laird, was spent with us battling his so-called enlightenment, and him battling our so-called ignorance, which is the highest form of bullshit I ever heard in my life.

Laird: I guess it’s kind of hard for jazz drummers to know what to play with these kind of things.  Because they use tabla drums, and different percussion instruments.
When the other cat’s running out of breath he passes it on to you, and you keep that one note going.  But, I mean, that’s a secondary thing to the tune.  It was a nice sound.
Laird: It’s nice to hear music like this, to sort of keep your bearings, so to speak, on how these things should really be played.

The guitarist’s creative control was the cause of some tension within the band, as Hammer, Goodman, and Laird were not only helping to shape the songs, they were also composers in their own right.
Mclaughlin collected the arsenal of Jerry Goodman on violin, Jan Hammer on keys, Rick Laird on bass, and Billy Cobham on drums. The musicianship, the spirit, the conversational soloing, the unique compositions, the intensity, and the overall effect this release holds is far too superb for this reviewer to dare confine in mere words.

The improvisations, particularly McLaughlin's post-Hendrix machine-gun assaults on double-necked electric guitar and Jerry Goodman's flights on electric violin, owe more to the freakouts that had been circulating in progressive rock circles than to jazz, based as they often are on ostinatos on one chord.
These still sound genuinely thrilling today on CD, as McLaughlin and Goodman battle Jan Hammer's keyboards, Rick Laird's bass, and especially Billy Cobham's hard-charging drums, whose jazz-trained technique pushed the envelope for all rock drummers.
Aimed with absolute precision at young rock fans, this record was wildly popular in its day, and it may have been the cause of more blown-out home amplifiers than any other record this side of Deep Purple.

After this, Goodman's violin solo makes its appearance -- a bit more flashy than the guitar part, this is still a fairly impressive number (even if it doesn't develop as well as McLaughlin's part).
After Laird briefly teases a bass solo, Hammer then bursts forth on his own with a fairly wild Moog performance.

The stepping stone between McLaughlin's work with Tony Williams's Lifetime and his own group, the Mahavishnu Orchestra was the album My Goals Beyond (Rykodisc RCD 101051), recorded in March 1971, around the time Lifetime were breaking up.
McLaughlin had earmarked Goodman and Cobham as possible sidemen for a new electric ensemble he proposed forming and the date provided the opportunity to put his ideas to them and invite them both to join him.
On the recommendation of bassist Miroslav Vitous, McLaughlin approached Sarah Vaughan's pianist Jan Hammer and turned to fellow expatriate Rick Laird, just off the road after two years playing bass with the Buddy Rich Big Band.
