Rick Nelson was one of the very biggest of the '50s teen idols, so it took awhile for him to attain the same level of critical respectability as other early rock greats.
Nelson was lured away from the Imperial label by a mammoth 20-year contract with Decca in 1963 (which would be terminated prematurely in the mid-'70s), and for a year or so the hits continued, at a less frenetic pace.
Nelson would continue to record off and on for the next dozen years and toured constantly, yet he was unable to capitalize on his assets.

Born in Teaneck, New Jersey, he was the younger son of Ozzie Nelson, the leader of a big band, and Harriet Hilliard Nelson, the band's singer.
Along with brother David Nelson, the family starred in the long-running radio and television series The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet from 1944 to 1966; until 1949, the sons were played on radio by professional actors.
His twin sons, Gunnar and Matthew Nelson, also were teen idols, performing as Nelson, and his daughter Tracy Nelson is an actress and cancer survivor.

A memorial service was held at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in California, and a show featuring Rick, Fats Domino, Johnny Cash, Jerry lee Lewis and Roy Orbison, which had been recorded before his death, was aired on American television as a tribute to Rick.

Rick's 1967 and 1968 albums, actually recorded back-to-back, were an odd departure from anything he'd ever done before, and a questionable move after the success of his 2 country albums just before.
I would recommend it to '60's music fans as well as to Nelson fans (who actually might be the ones to dislike it as the albums are such a radical departure from the rest of his work).
Rick Nelson was a sadly underrated talent, but hopefully with the reissues and the recent VH1 movie, he'll finally receive his just due.
