Topic: Ricochet (comics)

In the News (Wed 23 Dec 09)

  Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Ricochet Rabbit
Ricochet was the sheriff of Hoopen Holler, a town that looked just like any number of other fictional towns of the Old West, except of course for being drawn in cartoon style.
Ricochet's voice was Don Messick (Scooby-Doo, Papa Smurf and much more) and Droop-along's was Mel Blanc (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and much, much more).
Ricochet and Droop-along appeared in only ten segments on Magilla's show before being replaced by Breezly & Sneezly, a pair of arctic fauna that mooched off a nearby military base.

Ricochet (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ricochet was an alternate identity used by the fictional superhero Spider-Man, and later adopted by college student Johnny Gallo, who appeared in the Marvel Comics' series, Slingers.
Ricochet learned that the Black Marvel had made a deal with Mephisto, the demon king, to get the costumes and find the youths to become the Slingers, and Mephisto had the Black Marvel as his captive.
Later, Ricochet joined another team of teen heroes, Excelsior, with the goal to dissuade young people from becoming superheroes, noting that all of his efforts had not earned him one ounce of fame and recogntion.

With this forward-thinking attitude to comics retailing and diversity of approach, I knew that Speeding Bullet Comics was a worthy candidate to be featured in Sequential Tart.
But over time, comics will have to be available more universally — whether that's through additional direct market outlets, bookstore sales, internet sales or something else entirely — to raise the industry's numbers to healthier levels than they were in the late 1990s.
MP: The new comics are racked alphabetically by title, broken down into Dark Horse, Marvel, Crossgen, Image and independents, and DC, with DC having the subcategories WildStorm and Vertigo.

Looks like your comic pimpin' amigo has opened up quite a can of worms with last week's column with nothing more than an off-handed mention, because my in-box has been piling up with emails from fellow retailers with questions and comments about genre-racking.
Well, to start, chances are almost all of a comic store's customers have spent time shopping in bookstores, CD stores, and video stores, all of which employ genre racking, so they'll be able to navigate the shelves pretty well on their own.
The first ever digitally created comic book, SHATTER's beautiful dot-matrix art was drawn on a first-generation Macintosh which, for you tech junkies out there, boasted a mere 128 KB of RAM.

Comic book stores, and the comic industry as a whole, have enough of an image of "a place to buy superhero comics for children and the socially "maladjusted"" that we really didn't feel comfortable promoting that impression in a particularly vociferous manner.
One of the realities of comics is that while we have such an incredible diversity of products right now to offer readers of all ages and of all styles; unfortunately, if you ask Johnny or Josie on the street, he or she would answer that comics are superhero stories for 10-14 year old boys.
And one of the problems with that perception is that a lot of comic fans, a lot of comic professionals, and a lot of comic retailers are insecure in their hobby, in their pastime, in their livelihood, in the artform.

The sickest part of my Ricochet rumba has been the constant questions from onlookers in cafes, public parks, bookstores and meetings, and the skin-crawling ego satisfaction I got from explaining.
Endlessly the questions came, from the honestly puzzled to the enviously awed: "What's that on your computer?" "Is that what I think it is?" "No, that's not a PDA or a disk drive," I'd reply smoothly.
The smuggest of the self-appointed digerati I met would occasionally challenge me: "How's Metricom's stock doing?" "Hasn't the company had trouble getting people to subscribe?" Always I'd placate these people with their niggling concerns, soothing their minds and putting them down at the same time.
