Plotting the revival of Ricochet CNET News.com
But Aaronson, who intends to "relight" Ricochet this year, remains convinced that 2002 will be more promising for wireless Internet service providers.
Can Ricochet, a high-speed wireless Internet service that collapsed in last year's dot-com implosion, stage a Lazarus-like comeback?
Given that, you have to price it appropriately; $69 dollars (the price of the old Ricochet service)--well, you already saw the results of that.

Wired News: A Rebirth for Ricochet
01:20 PM Aug. 16, 2002 PT Against all odds, the Ricochet wireless Internet service has returned from the grave.
This week, Ricochet, a mobile broadband network whose parent company filed for bankruptcy last year, said that it is now offering service to customers in Denver.
Although the speed of Ricochet service is slightly slower than cable and DSL, it also has the advantage of being mobile.

 Buffalo Wireless Internet Service
The service was sold to Aerie Networks, which has patiently resurrected Ricochet in two cities, San Diego and its hometown of Denver, not coincidentally the final stop on my road trip.
In fact, the service is so slow that it's used only for short queries to the FBI or other law nforcement agencies to make sure that someone stopped for, say, speeding isn't wanted for murder elsewhere.
While other networks, such as Ricochet's, use sophisticated routing tables to balance network traffic and transfer mobile users from one access point to another, none attempts Mesh's Herculean task of tracking proto-access points, also moving around at highway speed.

Wired News: Ricochet Wireless Rides Again
Right now, Ricochet mobile Internet service is only available in San Diego, California, and Denver, Colorado, and plenty of neighborhoods in those areas are dark.
She called Ricochet a "has-been technology" that is vulnerable to inroads from so-called 2.5G service, which offers slow wireless access through widely available telephone company networks.
"We actually were customers and bought a few of the units," recalled Andy Taubman, chairman of NetHere, a San Diego company that recently began distributing the new Ricochet service.

Ricochet, a wireless high-speed Internet service with a checkered past, appears to be experiencing difficulties again.
Ricochet service originally was offered by Metricom, a San Jose company that spent billions of dollars building the Ricochet network in 17 cities.

Net service Ricochet bounces into new hands CNET News.com
Struggling Ricochet Networks, a pioneer among wireless Internet service providers, has been bought by YDI Wireless in a deal valued at $3.5 million.

 Ricochet Wireless Internet Service Resurrected
Ricochet, under its previous management by Metricom, seemed assured a promising future providing national wireless service coverage without the excessive accompanying expense that other wireless competitors had to endure.
New owners Aerie Networks, Inc. who acquired Richochet's assets for a mere 8.25 million dollars have already re-started Ricochet wireless access services in their home state of Colorado.
Ricochet transmitters, called micro cell radios, were affixed to existing infrastructures like light poles and other objects thus avoiding the need to build large transmission towers.

New mobile modem hits download speeds of 128 kbps CNET News.com
The newer service, also called Ricochet, delivers Internet content to PC customers at 128 kbps, comparable to an ISDN connection and several times faster than dial-up modems or the original Ricochet offering, which is only capable of 28.8-kbps downloads.
Its original Ricochet service drew a small, but die-hard customer base.
But it was available in only three cities, and its speeds had long been surpassed--although the faster technologies such as 56-kilobits per second ( kbps) modems and digital subscriber lines ( DSL) do not offer portability.

EarthLink founder takes to the air CNET News.com
EarthLink chairman and founder Sky Dayton will unveil his newest company on Thursday, a wireless Internet service provider named "Boingo."
Dayton has built Boingo the same way he built EarthLink, said Tim Bajarin, a wireless analyst with Creative Strategies, a high-tech consulting firm in San Jose, Calif. Instead of actually building his own network, he either bought or partnered with enough smaller carriers to offer EarthLink service on a national scale.
Among the failed wireless providers was Ricochet, which charged $80 a month and attracted only 50,000 customers.
