Ride cymbal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some drummers use a china cymbal, a sizzle cymbal or a specialised tone such as a swish or pang cymbal as a ride cymbal.
In rock or jazz, the ride cymbal is most often struck regularly in a rhythmic pattern as part of the accompaniment to the song.
Exceptions are when a sizzle or china type is used as a secondary ride, when it will often be a size larger but thinner than the main ride in order to give a similar volume and sensitivity, and in big band situations where the main crash was traditionally slightly larger than the main ride.

A cymbal (circular brass plate) that sits on a stand at an angle as is part of the drum kit (drum set), and is struck with drum sticks or brushes to keep a rhythmic pulse of the composition.
Ride cymbals can come in thicker or thinner versions that provide the right sound for certain styles of music and are typically 20 to 22 inches in diameter.
A rock band may require a heavier cymbal for the louder music where a jazz band or combo may prefer a thinner lighter sound.

I want this new ride to have good clear stick definition for close mic recording and yet cut through for live work (which is sometimes not mic'd in small venues).
I have been listening to various cymbals in every series from Zildjian and I think the one that best suits my needs is smoehting like a rock ride or a sweet ride in the Avedis (A) series.
P.S., if you still want your ride to be crashable, you'll need a thin edge, which would require that you have a more aggressive taper from your thick bell to the thin edge.

I generally torque my ride a little tight to reduce sustain and overtones, so the rigidity of the PD-9 won't be that foreign to me. Laying the meat of the stick across the rim trigger will do just fine for triggering the bell sound.
I'm used to a pretty fair amount of hard bounce from a ride cymbal, being used to heavier rides that aren't intended for crash use.
These are things that an acoustic ride don't have, and thus altered the feel and motion of the bronze cymbal to a degree that it doesn't seem to react quite like its unencumbered acoustic counterpart.

Swish cymbal | TutorGig.co.uk Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The 'swish cymbal' and the 'pang cymbal' are exotic ride cymbals originally developed as part of the collaboration between Gene Krupa and the Avedis Zildjian Company.
Both the swish and the pang have an upturned rim and are most often but not always mounted bell down, and in this and their tone are similar to a china cymbal.
The swish has a higher tone than the pang and is washier with a less pronounced ping, and this difference was accentuated as the swish was originally sold with rivets already installed (see sizzle cymbal) while the pang was sold without rivets.

 Peter Erskine Forum: Cymbals
I have a minor problem conserning a beautiful 22" (thin) ride cymbal i am glad to own: i can't get clear articulation (the attack is a bit weak) and in fast tempos it often starts to "roar".
I have used both a Ride and a crash for this purpose (not my "main" ride, usually), though nowadays I'm more likely to use a small crash for this effect (15" or 16" K, for example).
It seems the cymbal weight is too thick- the rivets act as a dampener if I try to ride it at a low volume- brushes are out of the question.

However, this ride is not your classic ride, it has a lot of crashy overtones which I love, but not all people do.

For me, a drum is just a drum, but a cymbal evokes a stong passion in me--especially a good ride cymbal.
For instance, in the early twentieth century, drummers played snare rhythms with straight quarter notes on the bass drum, while cymbals were mainly used for choked accents.
This book explains how cymbals began to be categorized as either ride or crash cymbals and how drumming styles evolved even further with the invention of the ride cymbal.
