DVD Times - Ride The High Country
Ride The High Country is an old man’s film made by a young one and it’s partly the clash between the energy and dynamism of the filmmaker and the weariness and gentle sadness of the protagonists that makes it such an interesting and rewarding film.
Ride The High Country is played very straight and while that’s appealing, it’s limiting and it doesn’t allow Peckinpah the luxury of too many grey areas - the spaces in which he is at his very best.
Peckinpah came to Ride The High Country as an enthusiastic TV director with one film behind him - The Deadly Companions which was destroyed by its producer - and a glittering career in front of him.

Ride the High Country Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Ride the High Country is widely regarded not only as one of director Sam Peckinpah's best films, it's also considered one of the great Westerns of all time.
Filmed in Inyo National Forest, Ride the High Country is set in California gold country rather than the plains or the desert, and the Joshua Redman cinematography is as superb as you'll find in a John Ford film.
In a way, it's surprising that Ride the High Country has so much depth and not so much as a hint of melodrama, because Peckinpah's only previous experience with Westerns was directing episodes for TV series like Gunsmoke, Broken Arrow, and The Rifleman.

It is, therefore, unsurprising that the reason we don’t hear as much about George Bassman as, say, Herrmann or Rozsa, is because he is nowhere near as good as them.
Indeed, apart from the fine, nostalgic main theme for Ride the High Country, which falsely promises so much, there is absolutely nothing about Bassman’s work that can be described as anything more than routine.
Bassman’s background in jazz and as an arranger for musicals is strikingly similar to that of fellow-MGM composer Andre Previn who also, despite all his other talents, never seemed to find his own voice as a composer.
