To respond to concerns of residents, the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton (as the region was formerly named) joined the Canadian Museum of Nature in 1995 in a study of the quality of the River's water, its microscopic algae, and the spread of zebra mussels (an invading exotic species).
The length of the Rideau River to be studied was stretched from Smiths Falls to the Ottawa River.
The Rideau River Biodiversity Project was initiated with the goal of recording the River's biodiversity, of determining its bill of health, and of working towards its preservation, all with the close co-operation of the community.

The length of the river is 1,271 km and it drains an area of 146,000 km².
Following the retreat of the glaciers from this area at the end of the last ice age, the Ottawa River valley was flooded by an arm of the Atlantic Ocean known as the Champlain Sea.

Steam navigation on the river began as early as 1822 between Grenville and Hull, which proved essential for the construction of the lumberyards of Philomen Wright, and for the construction of the Rideau Canal by Colonel John By from 1826 to 1832.
When Queen Victoria chose Bytown to be the capital of the Province of Canada in 1857, the river once again served bravely in the construction of the majestic parliament buildings which were completed in 1866, and in the subsequent growth of the little community.
From my experience, however, the river always holds something of interest, whether that may be a hot air balloon attempting to perform a "baptism" on the water, or a friendly sailboat race running from the Hull Marina to Kettle Island.

This section commences with a delightful 20 km ride along the south shore of the Rideau River.
After crossing the river, you will head north towards the Nation's Capital and end with a 10 km ride alongside the Ottawa River on one of the city's many excellent bikeways.
If you are not on the river side, be sure to cross the road (preferably using the underpass) where you will find the Ottawa River Pathway, an excellent paved bike path that was re-surfaced in 2003.
