May 2002 a committee of interested individuals from various backgrounds was formed to erect a Celtic Cross monument in Ottawa in memory of the estimated 500 labourers who died building the Rideau Canal.
While much has been written about the Rideau Canal and many people enjoy its great beauty only a comparatively few have pondered on the tragic deaths and great suffering endured by the thousands of mainly Irish and French Canadian labourers, without whom the canal could not have been built.
Frequent accidents along the length of the Canal mainly effected the thousands of pick and shovel labourers – deaths by the explosives used to blast rock, being swept away in fast flowing water and by being buried while clearing the banks of large trees are all recorded.

This year we took the Lady Jane for a 2 week cruise up the Rideau Canal in Ontario, Canada.
The passes are good for any 6 days on the canal, they don't have to be consecutive, which is nice if you want to stay at dock for a few days.
As we started up the Rideau, I was pleasantly surprised to see the extent of the channel markers.
