Tarot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Other esoteric decks include the Golden Dawn Tarot, which is apparently based on a deck by SL MacGregor Mathers and clearly based on the teachings of the Golden Dawn.
Esoteric decks are often used in conjunction with the study of the Hermetic Qabala; in these decks the Major Arcana are illustrated in accordance with Qabalistic principles while the numbered suit cards (2 through 10) sometimes bear only stylized renderings of the suit symbol.
A widely-used esoteric Tarot deck is Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot (pronounced /təʊt/ or /θɒθ/).

BBC - h2g2 - Pamela Colman Smith - Tarot Artist
The deck that Smith and Waite came up with was published by the Rider and Sons Company in 1909.
Waite was working on a new tarot deck and, aware of Pamela’s artistic abilities, asked her to illustrate them.
Many believe that it was the changes Colman Smith made to these minor cards that made the deck more accessible, allowing readings to be made by readers who didn’t have to remember the complex occult numerology, which lead to its success - nevertheless, she received no royalty on the sales.

And some "clones", like the Robin Wood deck, replace symbolism, thus changing the meaning from what A.E. Waite was trying to convey (for instance, replacing references to Christianity with references to Paganism).
This deck uses a bare minimum of symbolism and is most notable for using marbled papers, constellation charts and antique maps in collage.

Spiral Nature - Reviews - Book Reviews - Arthur Edward Waite
Waite writes: ‘It is regrettable in several respects that I must confess to certain reservations, but there is a question of honour at issue.’ Nonetheless, the Rider-Waite-Smith deck is certainly among, if not the, most popular deck used today, and however vague Waite is, it is an important work.
In Part II Waite gives a brief overview of the cards of the Major Arcana, with brief description of some of the symbolism, naturally vague and without expanding, and open to interpretation for the uninitiated, presumably assuming it is obvious to others.
Part I outlines the Tarot’s assumed and actual history, and Waite’s accounts of other writers thesis on the origins of Tarot are interesting, though, of course, peppered with Waite’s usual snide remarks.

Tarot & Your Spiritual Path:Choosing Love by James Ricklef
In many older decks, the Lovers card depicts a man who seems to be choosing between two women––sometimes where one appears to be a vamp and the other, a virgin––and Cupid, ready to let fly his arrow, hovers above them.
This card’s allusion to the Garden of Eden, with its archetypal implications of temptation and pivotal decisions, is clear.
Behind the woman, there is a serpent twined around an apple tree (symbolizing the Tree of Knowledge), and behind the man is a tree bearing twelve flames (symbolizing the Tree of Life).
