More than 100 years ago Robert Ridgway wrote of the rapid loss of Illinois' native prairie and its associated bird species, correctly predicting that undisturbed prairie would soon be very rare in Illinois.
Several species of grassland birds, that were considered abundant in Illinois at the turn of the century, have succumbed to the dramatic changes that have occurred in Illinois' landscape.
Some grassland bird species, that are still considered fairly common in Illinois like the grasshopper sparrow and bobolink are experiencing serious population declines (Table 1).

Ridgway stated concerning Bird Haven, “Bird Haven is a serious effort to produce something useful, at least to future generations.” The Ridgways built a three-room cottage home on the south line of Bird Haven, where they spent the summers of 1907-1909, while on vacation where they spent their happiest and carefree days.
It was the Ridgway's desire that Bird Haven be permanent sanctuary for birds and wildlife and preserved for future generations.
Robert Ridgway died on Monday evening, March 25, 1929, in his Larchmound home and Dr. Ridgway's funeral was conducted in the Larchmound home on Saturday, March 30 afternoon with burial on his favorite Bird Haven knoll that he had staked previously with a cedar stake for his chosen grave site.

We propose to use the winter nursery in Puerto Rico under the control Illinois Crop Improvement Association to advance early generations with the single pod-descent method to produce homozygous plants.
Two generations can be produced in the winter from October through May. Single plants selected from the populations returned from the winter nursery, will be evaluated in the greenhouse for resistance to Phytophthora, brown stem rot, sudden death syndrome, white mold, and soybean cyst nematode.
Soybean cyst locations in northern and central Illinois (Dwight and Urbana) would be used to evaluate early maturing soybean cyst resistant breeding lines.

 Virginius W. Smith (1912)
Smith was born at Cincinnati, Ohio, March 20, 1842, and was brought to Illinois by his parents Joseph and Eliza Jane (Akins) Smith.
Subsequently he rented the Crenshaw farm, three miles south of Ridgway, but during the fall of 149 came to the present farm of Virginius W. Smith, located one mile east of Ridgway, where he purchased eighty acres of land, for about $500.
He was one of the original stockholders of the First National Bank of Ridgway, but outside of this has given most of his time and attention to his farm.
