In late 18th century France, before the advent of the guillotine, wit was used as often for pain and humiliation as it was for pleasure.
Ridicule is not meant to be taken as a rigorous historical account, but, as with all French movies, the period detail is impeccable.
Ridicule is not just the tale of a decaying, degraded empire of favoritism, although that is certainly an element of the plot.

 RIDICULE - Definition
We have in great measure restricted the meaning of ridicule, which would properly extend over whole region of the ridiculous, -- the laughable, -- and we have narrowed it so that in common usage it mostly corresponds to ``derision'', which does indeed involve personal and offensive feelings.
Usage: {Ridicule}, {Derision}, Both words imply disapprobation; but ridicule usually signifies good-natured, fun-loving opposition without manifest malice, while derision is commonly bitter and scornful, and sometimes malignant.
{Ridiculing}.] To laugh at mockingly or disparagingly; to awaken ridicule toward or respecting.

Ridicule, French director Patrice Leconte's supremely caustic and biting tale of life at the Court of Louis XVI at Versailles, the aristocrats both literally and figuratively live by their wits.
For no matter how vacuous and unpleasant these courtiers are, their obsession with wit, almost to the point of fetishization, is still underlined by one essential thing: a genuine passion for the expressiveness of language.
When the perplexed and indignant courtiers ask for an explanation of the hilarity, the deaf-mutes' teacher gleefully tells the audience that it is untranslatable.

In "Ridicule," the courtiers are supercilious, middle-aged and overly-made-up, and their gambits as puerile as the urination in the opening scene.
Leconte doesn't so much coax or tease or charm his audience toward the moral of "Ridicule" as drive us like sheep, as if this were a TV movie about social injustice.

In order to get to the king, however, he has to engage in the elaborate rituals of the court, where wit is the ultimate weapon and ridicule and humiliation are more deadly than the guillotine.

FILM REVIEW -- Courting `Ridicule' / French aristocracy witty satirized   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
What's delightful about ``Ridicule'' is the way it luxuriates in the sensuous surfaces of 18th century Versailles -- the lavish decor, the absurdly ornate costumes and piled-high wigs -- while slowly detonating a series of grenades that expose the phoniness of that world.
Set in 1783, ``Ridicule'' takes place in the court of Louis XVI where Ponceludon de Malavoy, a provincial water engineer played by Charles Berling, has arrived to solicit a royal grant.
Working from a script by Remi Waterhouse, who researched documents from the Louis XVI monar chy and lifted phrases that were used in his court, Leconte portrays a nest of snakes eager to upstage and destroy one another.
