There are almost 30 wineries close to the Trail, and many welcome trail users to visit their cellar door.
It was dismantled in 1989, with the rails sent to Queensland for use on sugarcane plantations, and the sleepers sent to Melbourne for use in landscaping.
The trail was opened in the 1990's, and featured as part of the "Links in the Chain" Federation Centenary ride during 2001.

The trail follows the beach to the picnic area on the east side of Spalding Cove then heads northward to Cape Donnington Lighthouse, then turns southward toward September Beach, where I camped for night 1.
The trail passed through some wooded and areas of the park burned in the February 2001 fire.

 Rail Trails News
Having already cycled several of Victoria's Rail Trails, in early October we set off to explore the Riesling Trail in South Australia's Clare Valley.
The first part of the trail is a gentle uphill gradient through the outskirts of Clare, revealing backyard views of many lovely old stone cottages.
The trail is well constructed all the way, with a firm surface of fine gravel.

Horses and riders show a miserable regard for trail etiquette that hikers are asked to observe.
The fresh clean smell of alpine meadow is is overpowered by the scents resulting from the presence of horses along many of the established hiking trails.
I found that degradation of trails relating to use of horses occurred mainly on the popular trails used commercial (horse riding) operators.

In June 2004, Under the management of the Office for Recreation and Sport, Bicycle SA redeveloped the main spine of the Mawson Trail with the assistance of many project partners, local councils and the proud volunteers of Bicycle SA.
The trail traverses some of the most beautiful and spectacular tourist regions of South Australia including the Adelaide Hills, the Barossa Valley, Clare and Gilbert Valleys and the Flinders Ranges.
The trail is open all year round, but is best enjoyed between the months of April and November, as the summer months can be fiercely hot.

A great way to explore the valley is by walking or cycling the Riesling Trail, which follows the old railway line between Auburn and Clare.

We’re on the Riesling Trail and a lovely little wooden bridge across one of the sideways, Quarry Road, which heads towards the main centre, Clare.
