The modern heist movie was invented in Paris in 1954 by Jules Dassin, with "Rififi," and Jean-Pierre Melville, with "Bob le Flambeur." Dassin built his film around a 28-minute safe-cracking sequence that is the father of all later movies in which thieves carry out complicated robberies.
"Rififi" is more interested in the human element, and plays as a parabola, with the heist at the top before the characters descend to collect their wages of sin.
Streets are usually wet in movies because they photograph better that way, but Paris is especially damp in "Rififi," shot in wintertime and showing a criminal milieu where the only warmth comes in a flat where one of the crooks lives with his wife and little boy.

 DVD Review - Rififi
But "Rififi" is best known, and rightfully so, for the heist that is at the center of its tale.
This deliberately paced sequence is full of tension and surprises and is filmed in almost complete silence with no musical score or dialogue other than the strained breaths of the thieves coupled with the soft clink of the tools of their trade.
Presented in its original full-frame, 1.33:1 aspect ratio, "Rififi" is a fl and white delight.

It was fascinating to watch the preparations for the robbery, and the sequence in which the four men perform the deed is a justly-celebrated masterwork.
Rififi appears in an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 on this single-sided, double-layered DVD; due to those dimensions, the image has not been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.
In any case, I thought that the audio of Rififi seemed weak even for its era, but despite all of these flaws, the track wasn’t a total disaster, which is why I gave it a “C-“.

There is a lot of evidence that challenges to the mainstream pop culture of the 1950s owed much to the flickering embers of the 1930s and 40s radical movement.
Although "Rififi" was made in France in 1955, during the time Dassin was in exile, it eventually made its way into American movie theaters, including the Lyceum in Woodridge, a tiny resort village in the Catskills where I grew up.

DVD review David Ng Rififi is French slang for "rough and tumble" and while the word is spoken, or sung rather, in only one scene, the feeling that it conveys — the sense of angry, downtrodden masculinity -- pervades the entire movie.
Relentlessly copied, and itself borrowing liberally from its antecedents, Rififi is pulled off with the same cool efficiency as its climactic centerpiece, an elaborate jewel heist that occupies 33 dialogue-free minutes.
Released in 1955 and again last year in a restored print, Rififi is now available on DVD from the Criterion Collection, and it includes a half-hour interview with the director, Jules Dassin.

Also known asDu Rififi Chez Les Hommes due to the infamous Auguste Le Breton book on which it is based, Jules Dassin’s 1955 film noir adaptation immediately went down a storm in France and its title continues to be used as a European shorthand for pulp heist movies and hard-boiled thrillers.
What sets these later entries to the genre apart from their progenitor is that Rififi doesn’t use the heist as a gimmick; all the way through the action facets of character are revealed or developed in constantly surprising and sometimes amusing ways.
Dassin doesn’t break the icy tension for the whole 28 minutes, the dialogue bereft nature accentuates the anxiety of the audience as elements of the original plan go increasingly awry and, due to the nature of the vibration and sound sensitive alarm system, the characters are not permitted to use words to warn each other.

In 1955, Francois Truffaut hailed Jules Dassin's Rififi, saying "out of the worst crime novels I have ever read, Jules Dassin has made the best crime film I have ever seen." Dassin was in a particularly interesting situation at the time.
Yet Rififi is the exact opposite of those films, with their wisecracking wise-guys, always quick with a snappy remark or a colorful story.
The word "Rififi" roughly translates to "Rough and Tumble." The song grinds the movie to a halt, and even Truffaut singles it out in his review as a drawback.

It is, after all, the film Leonard Maltin calls "the granddaddy of all caper/heist movies" -- the work that defined the genre for the subsequent four decades of filmmakers, none of whom was able to surpass it for style or suspense.
It should be noted that, over the years, critics have taken their swipes at "Rififi." Pauline Kael complained about its "nasty" tone and particularly loathed the scene in which, as punishment for her infidelity, Tony strips his ex-mistress (Marie Sabouret) and savagely whips her with his belt.
Still, acknowledging all of the above, "Rififi" is one heck of a movie, and a landmark in French crime drama.
