Book Three of the Riftwar Legacy gets off to a fast start, as pirates attack the ship Ishap's Dawn in order to steal the Tear of the Gods, a sacred magical gem being transported in the ship's hold.
In the end I think the Riftwar Legacy was sort of like the new Star Wars trilogy though not NEARLY as awful (I hate you, Lucas).
Even though these "prequels" were all dissapointing entries in their own way, the first one ended up being the best after all was said and done.

 Raymond E. Feist
Raymond Fiest's Riftwar books are based on the premise that a spacetime "rift" has been created between the magical fantasy world of our heroes, Midkemia (a fairly straight-forward magical medieval kingdom) and Kelewan, world of war-mongering empire-builders (a fabulously complex blend of Samurai, Aztec and Roman empire).
Having only just survived a disastrous encounter with their sworn enemy, the Tsurani, the soldiers are headed for a frontier garrison, where they will be able to rest and recover.
Like the Riftwar Saga, the Krondor books are set in Midkemia, during the time between the Riftwar and the Serpentwar (see below).

This third tale in The Riftwar Legacy is a breathless race for a priceless treasure.
It's a race against time, against the myriad sinister and competing evil forces desperate for the all-powerful prize, and ultimately against the fundamentals of nature, which in Midkemia can be as formidable as the Gods themselves...

Dabel Brothers take on the Riftwar Saga
The next of those titles is based upon the short story "The Wood Boy" by Raymond E. Feist, a coming of age story that offers a common boy's perspective of the Riftwar Saga as he finds himself enslaved under a force of alien invaders as they occupy the manor where he works.
"The Wood Boy is a great introduction to the Riftwar because it gives readers a glimpse of both sides of the conflict," Sean J. Jordan told SFcrowsnest, the writer of the adaptation of the story.

It has to advance the story and keep the reader interested, but it can not answer the questions or resolve the problems from the first book since there has to be something to write in the last book.
A counterpoint to the mainly Midkemia point of view in the Riftwar Saga, the books about the Empire are almost a case study in intricate and devious political intrigue, mixed with the complexities of a society ruled more by honor than by law.
The next two books in the Riftwar Legacy should be even better, since REF is doing both of them from scratch.

Feist's two sequels to Magician, Silverthorn and A Darkness at Sethanon complete the richly conceived Riftwar Saga, and Feist has gone on to chronicle other aspects of his invented worlds.
With Janny Wurts he wrote the Empire trilogy, which charts the rise, through the rigid patriarchy of the Empire of Tsuranuanni, of a remarkable female heroine, a woman who eventually reaches the heights of the imperial throne itself Daughter of the Empire, Servant of the Empire and Mistress of Empire.
