The Riga Radio and TV Tower (Rīgas radio un televīzijas tornis) is the tallest structure in Riga, Latvia and Baltic states.
There is an observation platform at the height of 97 m, (that being the highest in Riga) from which most of the city can be seen (and in good weather, the Gulf of Riga), and many of the city surroundings.
The tower is built on an island called Zaķusala in the middle of the River Daugava, and the base of the tower is located in the altitude of about 7 m above mean sea level.

In Tallin the armed forces stormed the TV tower and advanced slowly towards the top floor where Estonian TV personnel were barricaded with weapons and food for several days, devoted to defending their TV.
These memories, of Polish struggles for truth and history, of radio rallying Baltic citizens to protect their national voices, of TV towers as symbols and catalysts of revolution — this is what the Ostankino TV tower burning meant to me. Not Putin's primitive metaphor for economic decay.

Riga Mayor Gundars Bojars said that Luzhkov has appointed Perelygin to head the working group for cooperation between Moscow and Riga, which is expected to sign a cooperation agreement on 18 or 19 August.
