Justification by Grace Alone Through Faith Alone by Dr. Zacharias Ursinus
HAT IS Righteousness is derived from right, which is the law, and is a conformity with the law, as sin or unrighteousness is the transgression of the law.
Righteousness, therefore, in general, as far as it has respect to creatures, consists in fulfilling those laws which pertain to rational creatures; or, it is a conformity on the part of rational creatures with those laws which have respect to them.
By legal righteousness we mean the fulfilling of the law by one, who is thereby declared righteous; or it is such a fulfilling of the law as that which is accomplished by one's own obedience; or it is a comformity to the law which he has who is declared righteous.

Eternal Truth - Works Salvation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Paul was speaking of works of the law, whereby men might boast in their own accomplishments, and James was speaking of works of righteousness and obedience to Christ, and putting action to our faith so that faith is not just vain profession.
Through these kind of works of righteousness men will not boast at all; knowing that Christ is the source of their salvation.
These are the works that every Christian must have in their lives as evidence of true salvation, fruit of the Spirit, and forsaking the ways of the world.

The Doctrine of Justification, by Zacharias Ursinus
Righteousness is derived from right, which is the law, and is a conformity with the law, as sin or unrighteousness is the transgression of the law.
Righteousness is in general either uncreated, as God himself is righteous, or it is created, as is the righteousness which belongs to rational creatures.
By legal righteousness we mean the fulfilling of the law by one, who is thereby declared righteous; or it is such a fulfilling of the law as that which is accomplished by one's own obedience; or it is a conformity to the law which he has who is declared righteous.

Righteousness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In another sense it refers to the righteousness of man; either his inherent righteousness (or the lack thereof), or his potential right standing before God or as being "judged" or "reckoned" as righteous by God (as the patriarch Abraham was in Genesis).
Righteousness as it is understood in the Old Testament is a thoroughly Hebraic concept foreign to the Western Mind and at variance with the common understanding of the term.
The apostle James speaks of the relationship between works of righteousness and faith (james 2:14-26), saying that "faith without works is dead." Righteous acts according to James include works of charity (James 2:15-16) as well as avoiding sins against the law of Moses (James 2:11-12).

 Righteousness By Works
Their righteousness is based upon the Scriptural understanding of righteousness which is achieved by works, that is, by how well they have lived their lives in accordance to God's will.
Righteousness by Works cannot give the one who performs it eternal life, for that is the sole realm of Righteousness by Faith.
Righteousness by Works is an extremely important element in the life of the Believer.

What we need to know about righteousness
Righteousness is that which is in accord with the nature and will of God.
Works righteousness is acting upon the written Word of God, by the grace of God empowering us to become like Yeshua, walking in His steps [1 Peter 2:21].
The Greek righteousness is from 1343 dikaiosunh dikaiosune dik-ah-yos-oo’-nay, a noun.

Paul, Faith, Works, Obedience, Righteousness, and Salvation...by Matt1618
Works, inherent, infused righteousness, and obedience is relegated to mere fruits of one’s justification, and evidence of one being justified.
Works, obedience and infused righteousness, is not only a necessary fruit of one’s justification, but is also a cause of it.
This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins; it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies him who has faith in Jesus.

 Baptism, Faith, and Works
The supposition that Paul's "not of works" comments rule out all physical responses to the Gospel are not based on Scripture, but on the dualistic thinking of Greek philosophy that still colors Christian thinking to some extent.
Paul contrasted "works of righteousness," which he explicitly excluded from salvation, with other physical acts which he stated plainly are connected to our salvation.
It is contrasted with "works of righteousness." The former is explicitly included in salvation, the latter is explicitly excluded.

 Faith and Works
The teachings on faith and works often leave me shaking my head, both are of vast importance to all Christians, yet almost without exception are taught out of context and therefore in error.
The answer is that Satan is not inactive in his works, and these works are to hinder the army and workers of God.
What this is instead is mans good works, the works of iniquity, and the god served by this false teaching may lead even the elect astray, if possible.

 Passive Righteousness vs Active Righteousness
So I throw away all my works, my tries at obeying God's law, and firmly hold on to 'passive righteousness,' that is the righteousness of grace, mercy and the forgiveness of sins.
The flesh is accused, tempted, weighed down with sorrow, bruised by the "works" righteousness of the Law; but the Spirit reigns, rejoices and is saved by this "passive" and Christian righteousness.
When I have this righteousness reigning in my heart, I descend from heaven like rain making the earth fruitful, that is to say, I enter into a new kingdom and I do "good works" whenever and however I get the opportunity.

 Luther on Works and Grace
Christian righteousness must rule the new man, the spiritual man, while the righteousness of the law must rule the old man, the flesh.
For the nature of this righteousness is to do nothing, to hear nothing, to know nothing whatsoever of the law or of works, but only to know and to believe this: that Christ has gone to the Father, that he is our high priest entreating for us and reigning over us in grace.
The righteousness of the law is good, but it must only be given dominion over the flesh.

Although they work hard, and they have accomplished a great deal for the Kingdom, they certainly realize that they fizzle out quickly when not depending upon God, and "depending" WITH each other, keeping the gift of forgiveness available to bestow on one another.
This reminded of me of several Hauerwas essays, where the miracle of forgiveness is seen as necessary to the whole enterprise; without it, we ultimately seek to control our world, and deny that we are creatures, dependent upon God.
Not to rely on the work of Christ is to rely on our own work to save ourselves and the world.

Six Errors of Salvation Through Works   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Faith without works is dead in the sense that true faith results in works, not in the sense that faith and works have to be combined before a person is saved.
That's why he mentions "the law" in one verse, "works" in another verse, "deeds" in another verse, works for which we receive wages in another passage, etc. The concept that Paul is excluding only some works from the gospel, and that he's including other works within the gospel, runs contrary to the text and context.
Even though Abraham did works in faith, it was when he believed, not when he later did works as a result of his faith, that he was saved (Romans 4:10-11).

Schürer's work is essentially a political and social history of Judaism in late antiquity, but is often used by Christian authors as a source of Jewish religious beliefs and practices quite outside the scope of the author's intention or expertise.
A common Protestant depiction of Judaism is typified by the phrase "works righteousness".
Those who would speak the truth have an obligation to ensure that their use of the New Testament, and of expressions such as "Jews", "Pharisees", and "works righteousness" is appropriate and in context, and does nothing to add fuel to the smoldering fires of racism and bigotry.

MEN'S OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS THEIR GRAND IDOL - SERMON IX
Therefore the righteousness of God must be the righteousness of Christ; the righteousness that God aims at is perfect, a righteousness that reaches to the very end of the law; your righteousness can never reach to the end of it; it is Christ's alone that doth it.
It is a righteousness according to the law; it is a righteousness of piety, of justice; "I fast twice in the week, I am no extortioner, nor unjust person, nor adulterer," &c.
When men put that upon their own righteousness, which should have been put upon God's only; when men make that the sanctuary and refuge that God's righteousness only should be, then is it set up as a grand idol, and established in the room and place of God's righteousness.

Righteousness is the end-line of the redemption and salvation process, the ultimate reason why we will go to Heaven or to to Hell, as clearly stated by Jesus in the above quotation, the last words of the Olivet discourse about the end of times and about the end of your life and mine....
Righteousness is a life in accordance with the commands of God, in all their breadth and height.
