The Italian libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave based on a novel Le roi s'amuse by Victor Hugo.
In order not to waste everything of their work, Piave tried to re-model the libretto and was even able to sort from it another opera "Il Duca di Vendome", in which the sovereign was substituted by a duke and both the humpback and the malediction disappeared.
The daughter of baritone Varesi (Rigoletto), Giulia Cori, many years later described her father's prima: Varesi was really uncomfortable with the false hump he had to wear; he was so uncertain that, even if he was a very experienced singer, he really had a panic attack when it was his turn to enter the stage.

Rigoletto is a great deal more sophisticated than this and our participation as voyeurs at the feast of rape, murder and sexual perversity is reflected on the stage by the heartless courtiers and, in the final scene, by Rigoletto himself.
Whatever happens in the bedroom, she is curiously empowered by something she calls Love and is prepared to dress as a man and be annihilated in a sordid house of assignation for the sake of it.

Rigoletto is a 1993 musical fantasy/drama produced for Feature Films for Families and described by Debbie James as "kind of a cross between Beauty and the Beast and The Man Without a Face, but with biblical themes" [1].
The film, set in depression-era America, depicts a young girl, Bonnie, who enjoys singing and gets lessons from the "monster" whom the townspeople suspect of foreclosing on mortgages all over town.
The movie was apparently not based on the opera Rigoletto.

Giuseppe Verdi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oftentimes scoffed at by the critics, in his lifetime and today, as catering to the tastes of the common folk, overly simple in chromatic texture and shamelessly melodramatic, Verdi’s masterpieces dominate the standard repertoire a century and a half after their composition.
Based on a play by author Victor Hugo, the libretto had to undergo substantive revisions in order to satisfy the epoch's censorship, and the composer was on the verge of giving it all up a number of times.
Moreover, orchestral and contrapuntal innovation is characteristic of his style: for instance, the strings doing the rapid ascending scale in Monterone's scene in Rigoletto accentuate the drama, or, also in Rigoletto, the choir humming six closely grouped notes backstage portray, very effectively, the brief ominous wails of the approaching tempest.

Composed in 1851, Giuseppe Verdi's RIGOLETTO is an intriguing study of the contrasts between good and evil.
Careless flirtations by the womanizing Duke of Mantua and the actions of his vengeful court jester RIGOLETTO play out against a backdrop of seduction, betrayal, curses and vendettas, ending in the tragic death of Rigoletto's innocent daughter Gilda at the hands of a paid assassin.
TLD's production of Verdi's RIGOLETTO has enjoyed several critically acclaimed tours throughout Western Europe since its debut in 1992 including performances at the 1998 and 1999 Summer Festival San Giovanni Valdarno in the Tuscany region of Italy where it was greeted with great enthusiasm by the public and outstanding critical acclaim from the Italian press!

One of the principal reasons is McVicar's decision to emphasise the tyrannical nature of the Duke (beautifully sung by Marcelo Alvarez), and the appalling social injustice that springs from a corrupt leader: his court is a place of physical and sexual abuse (graphically, but by no means gratuitously, depicted).
This violence throws the dual nature of Rigoletto into relief, making his toadyism seem all the worse and his vengefulness all the more sympathetic.
