On September 1, 2005 the towns of Ashiro and Nishine and the village of Matsuo from Iwate District merged, forming the city of Hachimantai.
On February 20, 2006 the cities of Esashi and Mizusawa and the municipaltites of Maesawa, Isawa and Koromogawa from Isawa District merged to form the new city of Ōshū.
Iwate's industry is concentrated around Morioka and specializes in semconductor and communication manufacturing.

Iwate Prefecture (&23721;&25163;&30476;; Iwate-ken) is located in the Tohoku region on Honshu island, Japan.
It was not until the end of the eighth century that the Nara authorities had penetrated deeply into Iwate, with Fort Shiwa, to the north of present day Morioka, constructed in 803.
Iwate faces the Pacific Ocean to the east, and borders Aomori Prefecture on the north, Akita Prefecture on the west, and Miyagi Prefecture on the south.

This whale, Maesawa-kujira, which lived in the early Pliocene sea, is a member of the whalebone whale family.They had become specialized in effective filter feeding through baleens.
This meteorite fell in Rikuzentakata, in the south of Iwate, 1850.
This is part of the biggest meteorite found in Japan.

Kinda crazy seeing as before going to college I really had very little intention in leaving the east coast (of America) let alone the country.
I was born in a small rural town in northeastern Japan (Rikuzentakata, Iwate), raised in a small rural town in northeastern America (Buckfield, Maine), and attended college in yet another small rural northeastern American town (Hanover, New Hampshire).
Not a big fan of the city, but then there isn't really much work in the backwoods, so you have to go where the jobs are.
