RILEY County was the westernmost county of Kansas, having the Kansas River for its southern boundary, among those organized by the Territorial Legislature of 1865.
Riley County received its name directly from the military post of Fort Riley, and indirectly from General Benjamin Riley, an officer of the United States Army.
A large part of the Kansas River between the Big Blue and the Republican rivers is in Riley County, and on it are some of the garden-lands of the State.

Riley County (standard abbreviation: RL) is a county located in the U.S. state of Kansas.
Riley County, named for Mexican-American War general Bennet Riley, was one of the westernmost of the 33 original counties established by the Kansas Territorial Legislature in August 1855.
In the county the population was spread out with 18.80% under the age of 18, 34.50% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 13.30% from 45 to 64, and 7.50% who were 65 years of age or older.

Fort Riley has successfully removed contaminated soil from both the Pesticide Storage Facility and the Colyer Manor Housing Area (and other areas where lead was a concern), and disposed the contaminated soil off site.
In addition to the specific areas mentioned, Fort Riley is investigating other areas that may have contributed to underlying groundwater contamination and is treating or removing contaminated soil or waste from these areas.
