Rime is ice formed when a damp, icy wind blows over flowers, branches and other surfaces.
Rime frost looks like icing around the edge of petals and leaves, and only occurs when the temperatures are very low.

 Frost on the Pumpkin
Rime frost occurs when the rate of formation, usually under conditions of high atmospheric water content (vapour and/or liquid) and at least moderate wind speeds, is rapid and adds a dull, matte finish to the surface on which it adheres.
Hoar frost's white colour is caused by small air bubbles trapped in the ice crystal that reduces its transparency.
Frost crystals are usually small, but under the proper conditions if left undisturbed, frost ferns and frost flowers may grow quite large, particularly in locations well sheltered from wind and sun.

 The Weather Doctor Almanac 1999
Rime frost, on close inspection, has a grainy appearance, like sugar or salt, forming spikes, needles, or feathers and not having a recognizable crystal structure.
Hoar frost forms only when winds are light, which is often the situation during clear, cold nights; thus it is the most common type of frost to those dwelling in non-mountainous areas.
This appearance is in sharp contrast to rime frost which adds a dull, matte finish to the surface on which it adheres.

Rime frost occurs when the rate of frost formation is rapid, usually under conditions of high water content in the air (vapour and/or liquid) and at least moderate wind speeds.
Rime formation is common during fogs where supercooled or near-freezing water droplets come in contact with subfreezing surfaces.

This appears to be a combination of frost and rime ice, formed only on the top surface of a wooden bridge rail.
(Frost - 2) Every place along the bridge rail where we looked at these ice crystals, we saw something different - something to marvel at - something to be thankful for being privileged to be able to see it.
(Frost - 3) It is interesting how most of these ice crystals have developed independently of each other, so that we can appreciate their individual forms.

 The Mountain Times
Rime frost distinguishes itself from its more common cousin, hoar frost, in a number of aspects although both are caused by water vapour freezing into ice crystals on cold surfaces.
Unlike rime that forms at higher elevations, hoar frost starts in the lower regions where warm air has risen and left the pockets of denser cold.
While these two relatives form slowly as the water vapor freezes on the surfaces; rime frost is already frozen by the colder temps when it comes into contact; a process duly called deposition.

Weather Elements: Frost on the Pumpkin
Hoar frost is the most common frost for those dwelling in non-mountainous areas.
Frost forms first on rock, glass, or metal surfaces that lose heat more rapidly through radiative cooling than the surrounding air.
Frost formation may be sporadic across an area, particularly in hilly or mountainous terrain.

Dew, Hoar, Frost & Rime   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
Thus, on a cold morning, the grass, vehicle surfaces etc., is covered with a feathery structure of loose ice crystals, or hoar frost, which reflect light from all their surfaces and so appear white.
However, because of the small size, the heat released on freezing can be quickly conducted away either to the object or to the air, so that the whole droplet will freeze very rapidly and will not spread out as in the case of Freezing Rain.
It is because rime contains these air spaces that it appears white in contrast to glazed frost which is clear, solid ice with little or no trapped air.

As in his first book, the author sets out to convey his impressions of walking in the remotest parts of the Dartmoor wilderness.
Through these pages, the reader can join the author as he undertakes a bitterly cold walk out to Bleak House over the frozen wastes on north-western dartmoor during the 1996 rime frost, and many other expeditions.
These include a journey through the grandeur of the West Ockment Valley to Cranmere Pool in the northern morass, and the epic route over the Moor from Harford to Okehampton, following the traditional drover's track across the loneliest stretch of high moorland in England.
