Paghat's Garden: Pomegranate Myths   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
In ancient Syria the god Rimmon [2 Ki 5:18], whose name means "Pomegranate," was akin to Jesus & Tamuz & Baal Hadad, a sacrificial divinity who passes temporarily through death, & whose resurrection is either instigated by or attended exclusively by women, nymphs, or goddesses.
Rimmon seems for a while to have been a national deity overseeing lamentations for the death of Israel's kings [Zech 12:11].
Rimmon had also a sacred site in Benjamin, where the name Rimmon was associated with the father of killers [2 Sm 2-9].

It was placed in the territory of Simeon (Joshua 19:7; 1 Chronicles 4:32) and later of Judah (Joshua 15:32), It appears in Nehemiah 11:29 in connection with the returnees from exile who settled there as well as in Ziklag.
The place-name Rimmon appears in Zechariah 14:10 in connection with Sennacherib’s campaign in Judah and has been recently identified with the Simeonite Rimmon (Iran 1984: 192).
For the present, however, on the basis of name retention, geographic and topographic data, and the archaeological record, I suggest that it be identified as biblical Rimmon.
