We were anchored only 40 yards from the shore, and had a fantastic time watching them, and all the bird life: several different types of herons, egrets, curlew look-alikes, various unknown birds, and especially the brilliant flashes of emerald/turquoise which were the Javanese Kingfishers.
Rinca and Komodo, and a couple of other adjacent small islands, are the only places in the world where you find the Komodo Dragon.
The island is so hot during the day that you need to explore it before the sun gets too high, so we arranged to meet a ranger from the Komodo National Park at 7 in the morning.

The island of Padar and part of Rinca were first protected in 1938 when they were established as nature reserves (Auffenburg, 1981) and extended in 1965 when Komodo Island was gazetted under Ministerial Decree No. 66.
The topography of the southern part of the island is dominated by the 667m Doro Ora massif, while to the north the steep-sided peaks of Gunung Tumbah and Doro Raja rise to 187m and 351m, respectively.
The population, which is estimated at around 5,700 individuals, is distributed across the islands of Komodo (2,900), Rinca (900), Gili Motong (fewer than 100) and in certain coastal regions of western and northern Flores.

There are trails throughout Rinca and it is possible to walk around the island independently, but the Rp 10,000 fee for a guide is good value.
Both Rinca and Komodo have ranger and research stations that also offer resources and souvenirs of Komodo dragons, and at which one or two Komodo dragons make their home permanently, so visitors are almost guaranteed to spot at least these Komodo dragons.
Like Rinca, the island of Komodo also offers a variety of walks along designated hiking trails, but Rinca is home to more trees and a greater diversity of plants.

In April 2004 we took part in the first trip on board of Ciska to this new destination on the itinerary of this strong and reliable live aboard.
