The "ring around a rosie" refers to the round, red rash that is the first symptom of the disease.
For the "plague" explanation of "Ring Around the Rosie" to be true, we have to believe that children were reciting this nursery rhyme continuously for over five centuries, yet not one person in that five hundred year span found it popular enough to merit writing it down.
The rings referred to in the rhymes are literally the rings formed by the playing children.

Film Review: Ring Around the Rosie
In Ring Around the Rosie, "Karin (Gina Philips) drives out to the old family estate in order to clear out the property, as her dying grandmother has left her the summer home.
That's Ring Around - except we don't ever really feel connected to the victim, know why anything is really happening, and the viewer waits the whole movie for an answer that really never takes place.
Ring Around's failure is it just seems like youre watching the same sequence over and over - from the opening prologue to the end, Karin is hyperventlating, worried, and being saved from peril or shaking off some unwarranted scare.

The authors alluded to the "political incorrectness" of their findings, writing that other researchers "tread gingerly around the terrain of differences." Which is a polite way of saying that scientific research shouldn't be skewed to serve the gay agenda.

I remember the first time I heard the explanation of the "real meaning" of "Ring around the Rosie." During a unit on the Middle Ages, I heard an elementary school teacher give the kids an explanation that, to my ears, made some sense: this rhyme referred to the Black Death.
It seems, therefore, that the plague explanation of "Ring around the Rosie" is a product of our own century, and was not the "original hidden meaning" of the rhyme.
"Ring around the Rosie" is not a classic urban legend in this sense, but does fall under the larger heading of folklore which "everyone knows" is true.

Ring a Ring O'Roses - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Ring a Ring O'Roses" or "Ring Around the Rosey" is a nursery rhyme or children's song and game that first appeared in print in 1881 but may have been recited as early as the 1790s.
In the film V for Vendetta, the rhyme is graphically represented by a ring of children holding hands and dancing in a circle within a memorial for the casualties of a biological attack on the United Kingdom.
In the episode of Star Trek (the original series) named And The Children Shall Lead (episode #60), when the children are found on Triacus with all their parents dead, they are holding hands and dancing in a circle while singing this song.

Ring Around the Rosie (2006) - A Review by David Nusair
There's a hilarious sequence about midway through Ring Around the Rosie that perfectly exemplifies the film's incompetence, in which the central character (played by Gina Philips) falls out of a second-story window in her creepy house and is effortlessly caught by the estate's handyman.
Ring Around the Rosie has been written and directed by Rubi Zack, a first-time filmmaker who infuses the movie with an extraordinarily deliberate pace that is presumably meant to establish an ambiance of creepiness.
This is the kind of story that's been done countless times before, and Zach's refusal to bring anything new to the table ultimately transforms the film into a seriously tedious experience.

"An unsubstantiated legend has it that 'ring around the rosie' is a reference to the round, red rash that usually served as the first indicator that someone was infected with the plague.
Some people say it may be a corruption of 'achoo,' the sound made when someone sneezes....Others think it refers to cremation since, at the time, burning the infected corpses was the only way to stop the spread of the disease.

Children were apparently reciting this plague-inspired nursery rhyme for over six hundred years before someone finally figured out what they were talking about, as the first known mention of a plague interpretation of "Ring Around the Rosie" didn't show up until James Leasor published The Plague and the Fire in 1961.
Remember, in the days before freedom of the press (or even before the press), popular opposing political opinion had to spread by word of mouth, but be vague enough to avoid evidence and not name names...Back then, to be criminally charged as a "Common rhymer" was literally a charge of sedition.
And though I am NOT an expert on "Rng Around the Rosie", I have read enough researchers poo-poohing the connection to the plague to have some doubts myself.

After all, Ring Around the Rosie (2006) may eventually be the first horror movie clinically diagnosed with ADD.
Just when you think Ring Around is the Rosie is going nowhere, you discover that it's not really going at all, and rather than attempting to wrap up all the aimless bluster with ham-fisted contrivance, Zack & co. just give up.
But, for the most part, Ring Around the Rosie is lackluster and witless and can't even muster the momentum to go in circles.

Whilst possibly not related to the movie, I got a very strong 'Ring around the Rosie' vibe from the trailer.
The urban legend surrounding this piece is that it's a grim poem about the bubonic plague, most commonly known as the Black Death or the Black Plague, and wasn't originally a childrens' playground rhyme at all.
'Ring around the Rosie' refers to the plague buboe that appeared on the victim's face.

 Ring Around The Rosies
Although folklorists have been collecting and setting down in print bits of oral tradition such as nursery rhymes and fairy tales for hundreds of years, the earliest print appearance of "Ring Around the Rosie" did not occur until the publication of Kate Greenaway's Mother Goose or The Old Nursery Rhymes in 1881.
The ring of roses was a reference to the ring of 'bubos' or weals that often presented themselves in a cluster around the lymph nodes at the armpit or groin of a victim.
These were all collected within a few years of each other, so it is hard to determine that the "plague" version of "Ring Around the Rosie" was the original.

Ring Around the Rosie was/is a far better film then the reviewers here say it is. This is a creepy little film more in the vain of lets scare jessica to death.
Having said that, this film basically took the approach of shooting several incoherent scenes(since when is it terrifying to just shake the camera around and use lame camecorder type effects to create terror)of it's protagonist walking around or laying in bed.

Ring Around the Rosie : filmcritic.com Movie Review
Rosie has two primary differences: First is that Philips just might be imagining all of this, including her sister and Sizemore.
Second is that Zack at least doesn't have the street cred of Mike Figgis, so at least there's no enormous letdown like you get with a big name director.
Rosie's got not reason to exist, and I've got little doubt that if anyone even bothers to read this review, they'll be a member of Zack's immediate family.

The absence of "Ring Around the Rosie" would only be significant if there were people out there writing down other childhood chants at the time.
In my little devil's advocate role, I just thought I'd point out that playgrounds/children's rhymes can be like little sponges of the popular culture of the time, be it plague, murder, politics, or drugs.
So while the interpretations of Ring around the Rosie might be completely off-base, there are some grounds for considering them.
