  The Ring Cycle
The story of Ring would seem at first to be rooted firmly in the 20th century, with its central urban-legend theme of a cursed videotape which kills anyone who see it within 7 days; however, the mysterious main character, Yamamura Sadako, is definitely based on a very traditional Japanese character: the vengeful female ghost.
Somewhat unsurprisingly, a prequel was made in 2000, Ring 0:Birthday, this time directed by Norio Tsuruta, which provided a fitting and satisfying end to the series, a film which finally explained nearly all of the Sadako mysteries and chose a more dramatic than horrific style.

The Ring -- You would expect the motive that signifies the Ring to be powerful and assertive, but this motive is frail and mournful and a little pathetic.
Then notice that the Ring motive has the same U-shaped down-then-up structure as the first phrase of the Valhalla motive; it turns out the two motives are essentially the same music, only one solid and assertive and the other weak and furtive.
